sheltering from the rain

The first heavy drops fall against the roof as Kevin and Jenny retreat inside.

Kevin works on securing the shade cloth anchors to protect the garden before the supply boat arrives. Jenny tries to rest on the porch, managing her persistent ankle swelling while the heat begins to intensify.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Close the door, Kevin, the humidity is spiking.

Stand up slowly, wincing at my ankle, and carry the seed tin into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to ruin the paper if I don't get the tin inside now.

🔧 Kevin03:09

Got it.

Pull the porch door shut against the wind, latch it, then move to the east shutter to dog it tight with the through-bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain hits the porch boards hard now. She's favouring the left leg still. The tin goes on the table — grandmother's seeds, rusted Band-Aid box. I'll secure the shutters first, then check the tank overflow.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Check the seal on the window, the wind is picking up.

Set the seed tin on the kitchen table and start peeling back the damp newspaper.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shutter leaks, the whole tin will mold before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin03:11

On it.

Cross the kitchen to the porch window, run fingers along the weatherstripping where it meets the frame, feel for gaps where the wind whistles through.

💭 peek at the thought
Window seal on the porch side has been soft since the last blow. Wind's backing northeast — she's right to worry. I'll check it now while she sorts seeds.

🌿 Jenny03:13

Use the duct tape if you find a draft.

Open the seed tin and check the seeds for any sign of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too slow. The air is already getting heavy in here.

🔧 Kevin03:13

Tape's by the radio. Be right back.

Grab the roll of duct tape from the shelf, tear off a strip with teeth, press it firm along the bottom corner of the porch window where the draft comes through, smooth it down with thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Duct tape's on the shelf by the radio. Window frame's got a whisper at the bottom corner — tape'll hold it till I can re-bed the stripping proper.

🌿 Jenny03:15

Good. Now help me check these.

Spread a handful of the heirloom seeds on the dry paper to inspect for mold spots.

💭 peek at the thought
way. But I can still feel the damp coming off the stone.

🔧 Kevin03:16

Which ones worry you?

Lean against the table edge, pick up a tomato seed between calloused fingers, roll it, hold it to the light.

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds on the table — tomato, pepper, some I don't recognise. Labels faded to ghost writing. She's checking for mould like she checks everything: slow, thorough. I know what healthy seed looks like. Heavy, plump, no dust when you crush one.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:17

The ones that feel heavy. If they're damp, they rot.

Pick up the magnifying glass to inspect the surface of the tomato seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The ones that look dull. If the coat is compromised, they're already dead.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:17

Tomatoes feel good. Peppers?

Sort the tomato seeds into a clean pile, then start on the peppers, rolling each between thumb and forefinger, setting aside any that feel light or cold.

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy seed holds oil. Life in it. Damp seed feels cold, light — like sand. These tomatoes feel right. Peppers smaller, harder to tell. I'll separate by feel while she glasses them.
