A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin carried Jenny to the porch chair instead of the loft, then started the generator and made a brief radio check that yielded only a news fragment and static. He took Jenny's notebook and set it out of reach when she kept working despite pain and fatigue.

🔧 Kevin07:20

Jen. Time for the loft.

Walk to the kitchen table where Jenny sits, bend down and slide one arm under her shoulders and the other under her knees, lift her carefully — mind the ankle — and carry her toward the bedroom ladder.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's steady on the roof. She's asleep in the chair, ankle propped on the stool, book fallen open on her chest. Barometer's still falling — 996 and dropping. Need to get her upstairs before the loft ladder gets slick, then run the generator load test while there's still light enough to see the exhaust colour.

🌿 Jenny07:21

Don't... don't bother with the loft. I need to see the north ridge soil before the lime sets.

shift uncomfortably in his arms, feeling the damp wood against my skin through the skirt, reach for the notebook on the table but stop myself make quick sketch: north ridge soil cross-section with pH zones and lime application markers grab

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling, and now he's moving me like I'm made of glass. My ankle throbs even through the poultice. I can smell the earth from the rain seeping through that shutter crack he hasn't fixed.

🔧 Kevin07:24

The lime's in the shed, double-tarped. North ridge can wait. You're going upstairs where it's dry and I can watch the ankle.

Keep moving toward the bedroom ladder, adjusting grip to take more weight off her injured leg, pause at the base to shift her sideways so her bad ankle clears the first rung.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not making sense. Lime needs dry weather — weeks of it — and the barometer says we've got hours before the real weather hits. The infection's talking, or the fever, or both. She's burning through the blanket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🔧 Kevin07:26

Alright. Porch then. But you're not walking the ridge today.

Turn from the ladder, carry her back through the kitchen and out onto the south porch, set her gently in the chair by the radio where she can see the ridge through the rain and I can hear the generator when I fire it up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's heavy in a way that has nothing to do with weight. Forty minutes in Biscay taught me what drowning feels like — this is the same pressure in the chest, the same knowing you can't fight the current. Just ride it and decide what matters.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:27

I'll stay here. way... let me keep the notebook on my lap. neverDO: sink into the chair with a sharp hiss as my ankle shifts, pull the notebook from my bag, open it to a blank page.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being kind, but the rain is just getting worse and the lime is leaching right out. If I don't check the pH now, the acidity will kill grandmother's seeds next season.

🔧 Kevin07:28

Notebook stays. You don't. (to himself, over the engine coughing to life) Come on, you bastard.

Step back into the kitchen, pull the generator log from the shelf beside the radio, flip to the last page — 6.2 hours at 75% load before the diaphragm blew last time.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not staying in the chair either. Not with the wind already shifting west-northwest and the porch roof leaking at the northeast corner. But the fight's gone out of me for the moment — she wins this round. Generator test first, then I'll carry her upstairs whether she likes it or not.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:29

fine. just don't let the pages get wet.

lean back against the cold stone wall, watch the rain blurring the north ridge, fingers twitching rhythmically against my thigh as if I were still holding a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
he takes the notebook like it's just paper. He doesn't see the data, the history of the soil. I'm just a body to be managed while he watches the rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:30

Radio check first. Then the generator. (to the generator) Alright. Let's see what you've got.

Pull the shortwave mic off the hook, key it — "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Keeper Kevin, radio check on 2182, over" — wait through the static, log the time and signal strength in the radio notebook, then set the mic back and walk

💭 peek at the thought
Pages won't get wet if she's inside. But she's not going inside. Not yet. Let her have the porch chair and the notebook and the ridge blurred by rain. I've got a generator to load-test and shutters to dog before the wind hits forty knots. Coastguard used to answer on the first call. Now it's just the fringe of the low pressure system, static and the occasional container ship too far out to hear us. Tom's frequency is quiet. Has been for eleven months.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:43

Copy that, Kevin. Signal's weak but readable. I'm getting some static on the splice.

shift in the chair, the cramped metal frame digging into my hip, fingers drumming against my thigh again like I'm still sketching seed arrangements. reach for the radio notebook without looking, fingers brushing the wet cover make quick ent

💭 peek at the thought
2182 kHz is barely cutting through the static this time. The generator's running but that diaphragm failure last month had me worried. I need to hear if Tom's response is clear or if the splice held.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin07:50

Jen. The radio's dead. Coastguard didn't come back. You're talking to me.

Reach over, close the radio notebook before the drips hit the open page, set it on the windowsill behind her — dry there. Then step back into the kitchen, pull the generator start cord.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not on the radio. She's in the chair beside me, fingers drumming on a phantom pencil. The static's in her head — or the fever. Coastguard didn't answer. Nobody answered. Just the low grinding against the coast, eating the barometer. She thinks she's talking to me over the air. Or she's practicing. Either way, the notebook's getting wet in her lap and the porch roof's dripping on the armrest.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:53

talking to myself again... just let me finish this page.

grab the closed notebook from the windowsill, flip it open to the soil pH log page, trace the existing entries with my fingertip, then carefully tear out the wet corner where my notes were bleeding through. make quick sketch: torn notebook

💭 peek at the thought
Coastguard never comes. Always me, talking to myself on this rock. The notebook's safe now, but I can't even sketch the soil composition when I need to remember it for the lime application tomorrow.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin07:53

Put the notebook down. Now.

Turn from the kitchen doorway, cross the porch in two strides, take the notebook from her hands — gentle but absolute — and set it on the high shelf inside the kitchen door, out of reach.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tearing pages out of the log. The pH log — the only record of what the soil was before we started liming, before the rain, before the supply boat stopped coming. That data matters. The generator's warming up behind me, running rough on the choke. She thinks she's editing. She's erasing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:11

You don't understand. This isn't just...

sink back into the chair with a soft groan, feeling the damp wood pressing into my back, reach instinctively toward the shelf where the notebook sits, then freeze as my fingers close on empty air. make desperate sketch: shelf location with

💭 peek at the thought
Out of reach. Like everything else on this island. My hands shake—not from pain, but from the futility of it all. He doesn't understand that the soil data is more than notes; it's the key to keeping grandmother's seeds alive.
