Night watch in the storm
Rain hammers the cottage roof. Kevin sits at the kitchen table with the shortwave, listening through static for the supply boat's schedule. Jenny sleeps in the loft, ankle elevated, blanket drawn to her chin. The generator runs steady outside. The barometer reads 990 hPa and still falling. Lightning flashes illuminate the shuttered windows.
Kevin carried Jenny up to the loft bed and settled her with water and antibiotics. He then checked the generator, ran a successful load test, and secured the cottage against the worsening storm by dogging shutters, battening the roof tarp, lashing the radio mast guys, and staging the ditch bag. The barometer continued to fall to 990 hPa.
(Silence, muffled breathing in sleep)
Reach into the dark to find the cold metal of the seed tin on the nightstand.

Kevin — walk quietly to the loft ladder and climb up, set a hand on her shoulder to ground her, then ease the seed tin from her fingers and set it back on the nightstand. Pull the blanket up to her chin. Stay a moment listening to her breath.

(A low, sleepy whisper) Kevin?
Close eyes and listen to the rain on the tin.

Yeah. Go back to sleep.
Keep my hand on her shoulder a moment longer, thumb brushing once over the blanket edge. Then climb back down the ladder to the kitchen table and the radio.

Mmm.
Roll onto my side, ankle shivering as the dull throb sinks into the mattress.

Kevin — sit at the kitchen table with the shortwave, pen poised over the radio log. Listen through the static for the supply boat frequency. Glance at the barometer every few minutes — 990 and dropping.
