The Calm Before the Rain

Jenny sits on the porch steps with her ankle propped on a crate of seed potatoes. Kevin checks the barometer, watching the needle dip slowly as the overcast sky thickens over the north ridge.

Kevin checked the generator oil and fuel filter, then ran it under load; it held steady. He reinforced the garden shade cloth stakes on the south and north corners with heavy twine and timber strips. Jenny sketched the cloud formation over the ridge and noted the wind shift.

🌿 Jenny13:27

It's going to break before noon. Don't move the tomatoes.

reaches for her way and traces the cloud line forming over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If it rains now, the ridge soil will turn to soup and those three seeds will just rot.

Won't. Going to check the generator first, then the tarp anchors.

walk to the generator shed, check oil level and fuel filter, then run it under load to verify it's holding steady

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling — 987 and dropping. She's right about the rain. Tomatoes under the shade cloth will take a beating if I don't batten it down proper.

🌿 Jenny13:29

Check the south stakes on the garden too. The wind is shifting.

pulls her way from her lap and begins to sketch the specific formation of the clouds over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worrying too much about the machine while the sky is literally turning to lead.

🔧 Kevin13:34

South stakes next. Then the cottage shutters.

walk to the garden, inspect the shade cloth anchor points on the south side, reinforce any loose stakes with timber strips and heavy twine

💭 peek at the thought
South stakes took a hit from the coconut crab last week. Only two oak stakes holding that corner now. If the wind shifts southerly like she says, the shade cloth'll peel right off.

🌿 Jenny13:35

Use the extra twine on the north corner. The current looks wrong.

shifts her weight, wincing as the sharp throb in her ankle catches the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up, the whole stabilized patch will be gone before the seeds even take root.

🔧 Kevin13:36

North corner too. Be back in ten.

walk to the north garden corner, lash the shade cloth extra tight with heavy twine, then return to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tide and the sky both. North corner's held so far but the extra twine won't hurt. Her ankle's talking to her — the red line's past the poultice edge by now, I'd bet. Need to get back to it after the storm ties are done.
