Day 718 - Morning

The rain tapers slightly, leaving a mist over the island. The tide is nearing its low point, revealing the pools along the western shore.

Kevin inspected the dock's south end and confirmed rot in the third plank from seaward, while Jenny attempted to test north ridge soil pH but the test strip failed. A coconut crab was discovered raiding the garden overnight.

🌿 Jenny16:29

Jenny — limp to the stove and pour the remaining limpet broth into a tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
The mist is clinging to the spruce. I can't let this ankle stop me from the ridge, but I need to eat something that isn't broth first.

Morning. Generator's holding steady. Tide's bottoming out in ten minutes if you want the northern shelf.

Pour a mug of coffee from the pot on the stove and set it on the table beside the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on her own. That's good. The broth will help more than anything I can say right now.

🌿 Jenny16:31

I'll take the notebook and the pH kit.

Take a sip of the coffee and wrap the ankle bandage tighter one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is barely enough to get the gear on, let alone walk. My leg feels like lead.

Kit's on the shelf by the radio. Notebook's in the waterproof case on the porch. Third strip from the top in the kit — first two gave weird readings last week.

Pull on oilskins and boots, check the barometer again, then step out onto the porch to watch the tide line.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning the transect. Ankle's swollen but she's not letting it stop her. Stubborn in the right direction.

🌿 Jenny16:35

Jenny — grab the waterproof case from the porch step and head inside to the cottage. </think>THOUGHT: The third strip better work.

💭 peek at the thought
Third strip. The first two gave weird readings. What if this one does too? What if the soil's too acidic still? I can't plant those seeds in soil that'll kill them.

I'll check the dock planks while you're at it. South end's showing rot at low water.

Walk down the path to the dock, hands in oilskin pockets against the mist.

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the case inside — probably to sit at the table and plan the transect before the tide turns. Smart. Let her work dry.

🌿 Jenny17:11

Jenny — head to the dock to check the planks, taking the notebook and turnips from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Rot at low water means salt damage. The south dock needs attention before winter really sets in.

Take the north steps. South stringer's soft past the second piling.

Stop at the gangway junction, boot toe testing the third plank from seaward — the one Jenny marked with chalk yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
She said pH kit, not turnips. Must've misheard the wind. She's heading my way — ankle can't be happy on these planks.
