← Day 72

the old shrine · day 72 · night

Evening gathering

You both meet at the shrine as the light fades. The tide is rising, pushing against the rocks below.

The air at the old shrine is heavy with the humidity of the coming change, despite the dry breeze. The high tide laps rhythmically against the cliff base, sending salt spray over the weathered stones as the two look out over the fading silhouette of the north ridge.

Measurements held. Sleeve stock's ready to cut tomorrow. You done on the ridge?

lean against a weathered stone, flexing stiff fingers, watching the tide push white water against the cliff base

💭 peek at the thought
Shoulder's throbbing from the lathe work. The bronze measurements are done — 42.07mm OD, 38.12mm ID, 15mm wall. Good numbers. Need to cut stock tomorrow, but the light's going and the tide's coming up fast. Jenny's been on the ridge all day. She looks tired.

Not finished. The sedges are worse than I thought.

wipe a pencil smudge off the page and close the notebook heavily.

💭 peek at the thought
My legs ache from the incline and I'm so hungry I can taste the salt in the air.

🔧 Kevin03:20

Worse how?

turn toward the cliff edge, boots crunching on loose shale, scanning the water for whitecaps beyond the near rocks

💭 peek at the thought
She's frustrated. The Carex isn't what she expected. Could press, but she'll say it when she's ready. The tide's loud tonight — big swell pushing in. Barometer was rising this morning but that was hours ago. Should check it before dark.

🌿 Jenny03:21

They're thinning out. The soil is too dry on the upper terrace.

wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a grimy hand.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to explain the morphology of a dying grass to him right now.

🔧 Kevin03:22

The spring feed?

pull the notebook from my back pocket, flip to the water log page, hold it out toward her

💭 peek at the thought
Dry soil on the upper terrace. Spring's been low. If the Carex is thinning there, the water table's dropping. Not just a bad season — something's shifted. She's been watching it all month. I've been watching the Yanmar. Neither of us has been watching the water.

🌿 Jenny03:23

The tank is full, but the flow is slowing down.

take the notebook back and point toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the numbers when I'm looking at the roots.

🔧 Kevin03:24

When'd you notice the drop?

glance up at the north ridge silhouette against the fading sky, then back at her face

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full but flow's slowing. That's the cistern, not the spring. Means the spring's still feeding but less than before. If the upper terrace is drying and the spring's dropping, we've got a recharge problem — not enough winter rain, or the fracture's shifting. She's pointing at the north ridge. The spring comes off that flank.

🌿 Jenny03:25

This afternoon. The air is already turning heavy.

tuck the notebook under my arm and lean against the cold stone.

💭 peek at the thought
I felt it in my joints before the barometer even twitched a needle.
