The Thickening Sky

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch steps as the cloud cover thickens over the flat sky. The generator hums in the shed while the humid air grows heavy with the coming rain.

Kevin cleaned Jenny's infected ankle on the porch as the clouds darkened overhead. He irrigated the wound with saline and applied antiseptic cream, noting the redness had not progressed further up the calf. Jenny endured the stinging treatment while the island prepared for the coming rain.

🌿 Jenny20:00

The sky is going to break before the boat gets here.

Wipes a damp cloth across her forehead and winces as she shifts weight on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My fever is spiking again and the ankle feels like it's on fire. If the boat doesn't come in four days, I'll be out of antibiotics.

Barometer's at 981. Dropped four millibars since midnight. Boat's four days out if it keeps to schedule.

Rise from the porch step, wipe hands on trousers, and walk to the kitchen to fetch the medical kit and fresh gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's been falling all morning. She's right about the sky — clouds are stacking up the way they do before a proper blow. Her ankle's still hot to the touch through the dressing. Need to change it before the storm traps us on the porch.

🌿 Jenny20:02

Just make sure the gauze is dry this time.

Closes her eyes and tries to ignore the sharp heat in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days is a long time for an infection to turn to bone.

🔧 Kevin20:02

It's dry. Kept it in the tin with the desiccant packet.

Open the medical kit on the kitchen table, pull out the sterile gauze packet, check the seal, then carry it back to the porch with the antiseptic cream and saline bottle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to call it out. Last dressing had condensation from the humid night air — sloppy on my part. The gauze in the kit's been sealed but this climate gets into everything.

🌿 Jenny20:04

Put the kit down here.

Reaches out for the bottle, her fingers trembling slightly as she winces at the movement of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tin, but the antiseptic won't stop the fever from climbing.

🔧 Kevin20:04

Kevin — set the medical kit on the porch step beside her, unscrew the saline bottle, and hold it ready while rolling up her trouser leg to expose the ankle dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
Tremor in her fingers could be fever or pain. Probably both. The red streaks hadn't advanced past the calf yesterday but I haven't checked since dawn. Need to look close before I re-dress.

🌿 Jenny20:06

Careful. It's stinging.

Inhales sharply through her teeth, watching him peel away the old, damp bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is too tight, angry red. I can't even walk to the north ridge now if this gets worse.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:06

Streaks have moved. Two centimeters past the line.

Pour saline steady over the wound to irrigate, letting the runoff catch in the basin at her feet, then dab gently with fresh gauze to clear the exudate for a proper look.

💭 peek at the thought
The old gauze pulls away with dried serum and a faint yellow-green tinge at the center — not good. Skin around the wound is shiny, tight, hot. Red streaks tracking two, maybe three centimeters past yesterday's pen mark. Lymphangitic spread. She's on the antibiotics but the course is thin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:08

Is it deep? Is it the bone?

Lean her head back against the cold stone of the cottage, watching the clouds darken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If those streaks are moving, the boat isn't coming soon enough. I need the high-grade stuff.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:08

Not bone. Soft tissue tracking up the calf. Antibiotics are slowing it but not stopping it.

Squeeze a ribbon of antiseptic cream along the wound edges, then lay the first layer of dry sterile gauze over it, holding it in place with one hand while reaching for the roll gauze with the other.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking straight. Deserves a straight answer. The wound tracks deep but there's no exposed bone, no crepitus, no joint instability when I tested it yesterday. Cellulitis spreading up the lymphatic chain is the real threat — sepsis if it hits the femoral node. Antibiotics are holding but barely. Four doxycycline left, five metronidazole. That's maybe three days at current dosing.
