Midday Heat and Humidity

The sun is high and the air remains deathly still. The puddle inside the cottage has grown slightly under the shutter.

Kevin discovers a leak in the cottage shutter where water is beginning to pool on the floorboards. Jenny struggles to manage the infection in her ankle as her fever continues to rise in the heat. The heavy air remains still as the supply boat is only three days away.

🔧 Kevin21:22

Kevin — walk to the generator shed, grab the bleed wrench and clean fuel drum. Bleed the fuel lines at the filter housing and injection pump, then switch the feed line to the clean drum. Prime the pump until clear fuel runs.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's making the air thick. Shutter leak's getting worse — puddle's grown since this morning. Generator's next. Need to bleed those lines and swap drums before the fuel in the clean one runs dry.

I'm fine, Kevin. Just... tired.

Watch the puddle expand on the floorboards, rubbing the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The drip is counting down the seconds of my patience.

🔧 Kevin21:24

Water's moving faster. Be right back.

Continue bleeding the generator fuel lines — crack the filter bleed screw, pump the primer until bubble-free fuel flows, then crack the injection pump bleed screw and repeat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The fever's still there, ankle's hot, and she's watching water eat the floorboards instead of resting. But she'll fight if I push. Let her watch. I'll fix the generator, then the shutter.

🌿 Jenny21:26

Put a bucket under the leak!

Sit up with a wince, dragging the seed tin to the dry center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water gets to the tin, I lose the last of grandmother's life.

🔧 Kevin21:26

Bucket. Then generator.

Walk back to the cottage, grab the galvanized bucket from the porch, set it under the shutter leak. Then return to the generator shed to finish bleeding the lines and swap to the clean drum.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Bucket first, then generator. The floorboards don't need more rot.

🌿 Jenny21:28

Thank you.

Reach for the seed tin, checking the lid for any sign of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is catching it, but the floor is still soaking.

🔧 Kevin21:28

Kevin — at the generator shed, finish bleeding the injection pump. Crack the injector line unions one by one, crank the starter briefly until solid fuel sprays, then tighten. Shut off the old drum valve, open the clean drum valve.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Bucket's catching it. Seeds are dry — she made sure of that before the squall. Now finish the generator so we have power if the radio needs a long transmit.

🌿 Jenny21:30

Jenny — press a cool, damp cloth to my swollen ankle, biting through the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is making my vision swim. I need to check the ankle.

🔧 Kevin21:30

Generator's on the clean drum. Running smooth.

Let the generator idle for a minute, watching the filter housing and injection pump for any seepage. Check the exhaust — clear, no blue smoke. Then walk back to the cottage with tools for the shutter repair.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's turning clean. Fuel's solid at the injectors. Let it run a minute, check for leaks at the filter housing and pump. Then the shutter.

🌿 Jenny21:32

Don't let the bucket overflow.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching the bucket while the fever spikes in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working, and I'm just rotting in this heat.
