Grey morning, roof leak, driftwood on the beach

Dawn is grey and still, the air heavy at 26°C with the barometer holding at 975 hPa. Kevin and Jenny are on the cottage porch: Jenny propped on a stool with her ankle wrapped in fresh gauze and a sea beet poultice, a tin mug of limpet broth steaming beside her; Kevin at the table with the shortwave radio and a notebook open to the letter for Tom. Inside, the rhythmic drip of water onto the kitchen floorboards continues into a bucket near the window, the roof patch having failed overnight.

The heavy, humid air clings to the island as dawn breaks over a grey sky. The tide is high, water lapping steadily against the reinforced dock pilings, while the barometer shows a slow drop, signaling a change in weather before the supply boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny22:03

The bucket's going to overflow before noon, Kevin. I can't hear the wood rotting.

Reach for the mug, sip the broth, and start sketching the jagged edge of a sea beet leaf on the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The drip is off-beat, it's driving me mad, and Kevin is staring at that radio like it's going to grow legs and walk away.

I'll hit the roof after breakfast. Got tarp and battens staged. Just need the ladder and a dry hour.

Pour coffee from the kettle into my tin mug, then pull the ladder from the porch corner and lean it against the west wall to check the ridge line.

💭 peek at the thought
The roof's been weeping all night and my patch held maybe four hours. Bucket's three-quarters full already. Need to get up there before the next front pushes through — barometer's steady but that won't last. Jenny's ankle looks no worse than yesterday, which is something. She's sketching again. Good sign.

way make sure the ladder is secure; the wood is slick from last night's seepage.

Take a long, slow sip of the coffee and watch him work, my pencil hovering over the paper without touching the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks there's a dry hour in this humidity. The air is a wet blanket.

🔧 Kevin22:06

Good catch. Let me bed the feet first.

Pull the ladder back down, scrape two shallow grooves in the porch boards with the crowbar for the ladder feet to seat in, then set the ladder again and test weight on the bottom rung before climbing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The porch decking's been weeping sap and salt for weeks. Ladder feet will slide if I don't bed them. Should've thought of that before leaning it.

(quietly) I'm going to check the bucket. If it's full, I'll move it under the drip point. (quietly) I'm going to check the bucket. If it's full, I'll move it under the drip point.

Stand up slowly, shift my weight off the injured ankle, and walk toward the kitchen window where the metal bucket sits half-full of the gray water. </think>THOUGHT: Two shallow grooves.

💭 peek at the thought
Two shallow grooves. He's making his own trouble, just like I did with the anchors on the ridge.

Take the big tin mug too. Save you coming back down.

Grab the rolled tarp and two timber strips from the porch stack, hook them over my shoulder, climb the ladder to the west ridge, and unroll the tarp over the failed patch, battening the edges down with the strips and roofing nails.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful. Ankle's still bad but she won't say it. Bucket's got maybe an hour before it spills onto the floorboards. I'll be faster on the roof if I take the tarp and battens up in one go instead of climbing twice.
