Crate recovery and slope survey
Kevin works the crate in the surf at the south beach while Jenny surveys the high-ground slopes above the saddle for stable soil and tests pH levels.
Kevin hauled a heavy wooden crate from the surf onto the south beach, while Jenny tested soil pH at the hilltop saddle and recorded a viable reading.
You stand in the cold wash, a rope coiled at your feet, waiting for the crate to ride a wave close enough to snare. The timber looks old, the iron bands rusted but intact. Each swell lifts it higher on the beach.
Kevin — coil the rope tighter in my hands, plant my feet on the shingle, and wait for the next big swell to bring it within reach

Kevin — heave the crate up the beach past the wrack line, drop it on drier shingle, and wipe salt from my hands

You climb the path above the saddle, notebook and pH kit in hand, the wind steady from the east. The ground underfoot feels firmer here — less crab sign, deeper soil. You drive the auger in at the first test point and pull a plug.
Stay still, just once.
Mix the soil sample with the test water and drop in the strip.

There you go.
Record the pH level in the notebook and sketch the soil profile.
