← Day 727

the keeper's cottage · day 727 · night

shortwave watch and evening meal

Kevin sits at the radio table with the shortwave, headphones on, tuning to Tom's frequency for the 2000 schedule. Jenny ladles limpet broth into tin mugs and sets out the last of the corned beef. The lantern burns steady on the porch table. Outside, the wind has shifted southeast and the barometer reads 995 hPa and falling. The supply boat is due in 7 days.

The warm rain continues to tap against the cottage roof as the tide rises against the dock. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening indoors, listening to the downpour and managing the persistent leak in the cottage's foundation.

🌿 Jenny04:21

The tide's coming in high, Kevin. Check the way again.

Set the broth down and wipe the condensation off the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this rain stays heavy, the soil on the bench will shear before I can even start the cribbing.

Copy. Be out in a minute.

log the 2000 radio check in the notebook, then pull on the oilskin and head down to the dock to check mooring lines and piling braces before full dark

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Southeast wind on a falling barometer pushes tide higher than charts. The dock's lower planks will take a beating tonight.

🌿 Jenny04:22

Don't stay out too long.

Pick up the pencil and sketch the erosion pattern on the 40-meter bench.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the water is darkening under the pier; it's rising.

🔧 Kevin04:22

Won't.

walk down the porch steps and across the grass to the dock, headlamp beam cutting the rain, checking the mooring ring bolts and the south piling sister brace as the tide climbs

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the bench erosion while I check the dock. Good. We're covering both.

🌿 Jenny04:24

Watch the tension on the south line!

Lean over the sketch and watch the rain lashes the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If that stringer goes, the whole greenheart sister is lost, and I don't have the wood to replace it.

🔧 Kevin04:24

Eyes on it.

crouch at the seaward end of the dock, pull the south mooring line taut by hand, check the chafe guard at the ring and the splice at the cleat, then cinch the tension knot two turns tighter against the rising surge

💭 peek at the thought
She hears the tide from here. The south line takes the brunt when swell wraps the point.
