Evening in the rain

The two of you huddle near the stove, the smell of damp wood filling the room as the leak continues to drip into a bucket.

Kevin and Jenny sit inside the cottage as the air pressure drops, discussing the persistent roof leak. Jenny's ankle throbbed while she holds a warm mug, and Kevin notes that their current sealant methods won't hold against the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny05:09

The bucket is getting full again.

Reach out to move the bucket, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain doesn't stop, the north ridge will be a mudslide before I even get the seeds in.

🔧 Kevin05:10

Sit. I'll swap it.

Walk over, take the full bucket from her hand, set it aside and replace it with the empty one from the corner, then press my palm flat against her shoulder to guide her back onto the stool.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too much on that ankle. The swelling hasn't gone down and she's still treating it like it's functional. Need to get her off it before the infection flares again.

🌿 Jenny05:11

I could have done it, Kevin.

Lean back against the wall, watching the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's helping, but he's just making me sit while the world rots.

🔧 Kevin05:12

Didn't say you couldn't.

Hang the full bucket on the porch hook to drain, then pull the stool around and sit across from her, close enough that my boots touch the edge of her blanket.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not arguing to prove she can. She's arguing because she hates needing me to.

🌿 Jenny05:13

It's going to get worse.

Trace the rim of the seed tin on the table with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rhythm of the water on the roof.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:14

The flashing's holding. It's the corner joint where the lead meets the chimney stack. Tar's weeping in this heat.

Reach across the table, fingers brushing the tin's lid, then pull the roll of self-amalgamating tape from my pocket and set it down beside the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the leak. Or the storm. Or the ankle. Or all of it at once. The tin's lid threads are still corroded — I should've wire-brushed them clean yesterday instead of leaving it on the stove shelf.

🌿 Jenny05:15

The tape won't hold against that pressure.

Pull my hand away from the tin and look at the tape.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the roof while the garden is washing away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:16

No. It won't.

Pick the tape back up, turn it over in my hand, then set it on the shelf behind the radio. Pull the notebook from the shelf instead, flip to the roof sketch page, and tap the corner junction with a calloused fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tape's a band-aid on a structural failure. The corner joint needs proper lead dressing and a soldered lap, not tape. But the soldering iron's in the shed, the lead's been worked once already and may crack if I reheat it, and the roof's too wet to get a clean bond tonight.

🌿 Jenny05:18

We need more sealant. Or a different way.

Shift my weight, the sharp pain lancing through my ankle on the stool.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the tar is melting in the heat before the storm hits.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:18

We don't have sealant that works wet. The cement in the shed hardened. Lead pours cold on wet stone.

Stand, grab the tin mug from the table, and walk to the stove where the kettle sits steaming. Fill the mug, set it on the table in front of her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking like a builder now. Not a patient. The epoxy tub's empty — used the last on the dock sister knees. Roofing tar's half-gone. Could melt lead off the old flashing roll in the shed and pour the joint hot, but the chimney stack's stone won't hold solder in this damp. The real fix is re-bedding the whole corner in hydraulic cement when the weather breaks. Tonight, it's buckets.

🌿 Jenny05:19

Then we're just waiting for it to come inside.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug to stop the shivering, staring at the sketch of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so practical, it's suffocating when the island is falling apart.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:21

We're not waiting. We're catching it.

Pull the second stool closer, sit, and take her free hand — the one not on the mug — turn it palm up, and press the back of my fingers against her wrist, counting pulse against the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. The shivering's not the room — it's the ankle, the infection fighting back, the antibiotics not finished. The sketch shows terraces that don't exist yet. She's planning a garden on a ridge while the roof leaks over our heads.
