Afternoon convergence at the cottage
Kevin stands on the porch checking garden drainage while Jenny approaches up the path from the hilltop, cane tapping. The rain continues steady. The galvanized bucket under the northeast eaves drips rhythmically. The shortwave radio sits silent on its shelf, scan cycling. Both are hungry, damp, and carrying the weight of unfinished projects.
The pressure continues to drop despite the slight rise in the barometer, and the thickening clouds suggest a heavy evening storm. The ridge drainage is secured with the spruce timbers and stones, but the leak in the cottage roof remains a stubborn threat as the wind begins to pick up from the east.
Kevin — step off the porch toward the garden path, eyes on the drainage bed tarp

The pressure is dropping faster than the forecast said. We need to secure the tarp on the ridge before it catches.
Walk to the edge of the garden and start gathering heavy stones to weigh down the corners of the tarp.

Timbers by the shed. I'll get them.
walk to the garden shed and pull out the two remaining spruce cribbing timbers, carry them to the north ridge drainage bed

Put them on the windward side, but we need to anchor the edges with the heavy rocks first.
Lean on the driftwood cane and start digging a shallow pilot trench in the mud for the drainage line.

Dig the pilot. I'll anchor the corners.
drop the cribbing timbers at the windward edge, pick up the mattock from the garden wall, and drive the first oak stake deep at the northwest corner of the tarp

Be careful with the mattock, don't way a rock and snap the blade. The water is already pooling.
Push the cane into the mud, wincing slightly as the weight shifts through my infected ankle.

Blade's fine. You're not.
swing the mattock low and controlled, cutting the anchor trench along the windward edge, checking each bite for rock before full force

I'm fine. Just... just get those stones down before the rain turns the whole ridge.
Reach into my pocket and pull out the waterproof notebook, checking the sketch of the intercept trench one last time.

Notebook later. Trench now.
drive the second oak stake at the southwest corner, then haul the first heavy stone from the pile and bed it in the trench against the tarp edge

I know. I'm getting the stones. The water is moving too fast.
Squat down despite the pain in my ankle, and start gathering the heavy flat rocks near the garden wall.
