The Approaching Front

The wind picks up from the east, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dry garden soil.

Kevin tarped the north ridge drainage bed against the coming storm while Jenny retreated to the cottage to treat her infected ankle. The wind shifted west and rain began falling hard.

🔧 Kevin05:38

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, grab the heavy canvas tarp and timber battens from the porch, then head to the north ridge garden to cover the drainage bed before the soil saturates.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting hard now. The tar-seal on the north ridge drainage bed is still tacky from yesterday's work — if this downpour hits it before it cures, the whole bed washes. Need to get the shade cloth anchored over it fast, or at least weigh the edges with something heavy. Jenny's seed tin is inside, but the seedlings in the trays are exposed.

Get the tarp, Kevin! The wind is shifting!

Stand with a wince, wrap the ankle in a clean cloth, and watch the rain blur the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if he doesn't get that tarp down, the pH samples will be ruined.

🔧 Kevin05:40

Got it. You get inside.

Sprint to the cottage porch, haul the heavy canvas tarp and timber battens off the stack, and run back up the garden path to the north ridge drainage bed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — wind's swinging east-northeast now, driving rain straight up the ridge. The tarp on the porch is the heavy canvas, already battened with timber strips. Can get it over the bed in two trips if I move. Her ankle's bad; she shouldn't be standing in this.

Watch out for the gusts!

Lean against the cottage doorframe, clutching my ankle, and watch the sky turn a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the wind is going to catch that canvas like a sail.

🔧 Kevin05:42

Kevin — unfurl the tarp over the north ridge drainage bed, drive the timber battens into the soil along the windward edge, and heap loose cribbing stones on the leeward corners to hold it down.

💭 peek at the thought
Gust nearly took the tarp from my hands. Canvas is acting like a sail. Need to get it spread and the battens down fast — weigh the edges with rocks or the cribbing timbers before the next one hits. She's soaked already.

🌿 Jenny05:43

way back in! The rain is turning!

Step back into the kitchen, pull the door shut, and watch the wind lash the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He actually did it, but those stones won't hold if the real storm hits.
