Morning radio check and tide-pool scent

Kevin sits at the kitchen table with the shortwave, the shattered aerial still jury-rigged, and keys the handset for the 0800 schedule on Tom's frequency. Jenny stands at the door, one hand on the frame, the other cradling a mug of limpet broth, her ankle propped on a stool beneath the bandage and fresh sea-beet poultice. Through the open doorway the air carries a sweet, fermenting ripeness drifting from the woods — mango and guava coming into season — while the tide, still low, leaves the dock pilings exposed and the northeast foundation trench quiet under the flat sky.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny07:25

The boat is coming in three days, Kevin. Don't forget the water check.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the broth and looks out toward the north ridge, tracing the slope with her eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is too heavy today; it makes the skin throb in time with the radio.

🔧 Kevin07:25

Won't forget. Scanning now.

key the handset on Tom's frequency, hold it to my ear, wait through the static

💭 peek at the thought
The radio's cold in my hand. Three days. The supply boat doesn't care about the argument, or the water, or the trench. It comes or it doesn't. Jenny's watching the ridge — she's already planning the next thing. I should scan. I said I would.

🌿 Jenny07:29

If they don't answer, I'm going to the ridge at dawn tomorrow.

way sets the mug down on the porch railing with a dull thud and shifts her weight, watching the clouds thicken.

💭 peek at the thought
Static is the only thing this island gives back when the wind stops talking.

🔧 Kevin07:29

Your ankle hold for that climb?

keep the handset pressed, thumb on the squelch, let the silence stretch

💭 peek at the thought
She's decided. The ridge, dawn, whether the boat comes or not. My say doesn't change it. The static's the same as yesterday — white noise with a pulse behind it, maybe atmospheric, maybe nothing.

🌿 Jenny07:31

It'll hold. I need to see the soil.

Jenny tightens her grip on the doorframe, knuckles turning white as she bites her lip to keep from wincing.

💭 peek at the thought
He asks like I'm made of glass, not muscle and stubbornness.

🔧 Kevin07:31

Take the radio. Channel sixteen. I'll listen.

set the handset back in its cradle, reach for the handheld VHF on the shelf, hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's lying. The wince gave it away. The ridge is three hundred feet of broken shale and clay that shifts under dry weight, let alone a bad ankle. But she's made the call. Arguing wastes breath I don't have and she won't hear.

🌿 Jenny07:33

Keep the main one on in case the boat calls.

Jenny takes the radio, her fingers cold against the plastic, and turns back to the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's giving me the out of the silence.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:33

Sixteen's loud. I'll hear it.

turn the shortwave volume up until the static fills the kitchen, pick up the notebook and pen, sit at the table facing the door

💭 peek at the thought
Two radios. One on Tom's dead frequency, one on sixteen for the boat that may not come. She's already moving toward the garden, favoring the left side. The broth mug sits cooling on the porch rail. Barometer's steady at 997. Three days.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:35

I'm checking the tank before the light goes.

Jenny steps onto the porch, her movement slow and calculated, and starts walking toward the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me move like he's waiting for a break.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:36

Tank's full. Four hundred.

write the date and barometer reading at the top of the page, then 0800 — Tom's freq: static only. 16: clear.

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the tank. The trench. The garden beds. Everything but the ankle. The static hisses behind me — channel sixteen clean, Tom's frequency dead. Three days. I should log the water. Check the generator float switch like I meant to. The notebook's open to a blank page.
