Evening at the shrine

They climb the ridge together as the light thins — Kevin steady, Jenny leaning on the driftwood cane. The wind has shifted northeast, cool and damp. The stone ring stands in the grass, the 'E' stone and the softwood carving side by side. No voices carry up here, only the swell on the reef.

Kevin spent the evening at the old shrine, tracing the weathered carvings on the stone while the warm rain fell. Jenny struggled moving toward the spring, her ankle throbbing with every heavy step on the slick mud. They agreed to meet back at the cottage before darkfall as the tide continued its recede.

Still here.

stand beside the carved softwood stone, hand resting on the weathered 'E' stone, looking out over the cliffs

💭 peek at the thought
The wind carries salt and the smell of coming rain. My leg remembers the climb. The stones don't judge.

Still here." "Still here.

walk to spring and fill watering can with 400 liters of fresh water from tank, then check ankle dressing and replace gauze if needed, followed by examining the shortwave radio antenna insulator for cracks from salt spray, and finally sit on

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's been steady at 994 hPa for hours, but that northeast wind... if it drops six millibars in the next four hours, the swell will break the reef by dawn. I need to check the seacocks on the dinghy before dark, and I should probably plant those Moneymaker seeds tomorrow regardless of my ankle. The north ridge bench pH is 6.2 - perfect for tomatoes.

🔧 Kevin10:01

Kevin — watch her walk toward the spring, weight shifting to the good leg, the cane rhythm steady

💭 peek at the thought
She moves like she belongs to the ridge. The cane finds purchase without her looking. Forty minutes in Biscay water taught me to read the sea's mood — this wind brings more than rain.

🌿 Jenny10:03

I'm going to the spring.

walk toward the spring, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming at me every step, but I need to get that water before the rain picks up again. I hope the boat actually comes in two days; the tank is getting low.

🔧 Kevin10:03

Back before dark.

stay at the shrine, fingers brushing the carved letters on the softwood stone, eyes on the reef where the swell turns white

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need me to follow. She knows the path. The ankle's held this long — it'll hold the spring and back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:07

I'll be back.

walk toward the spring, favoring the throb in my ankle with every movement.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is holding at 994, but that northeast wind is wrong. If it drops further, the boat won't make the crossing. I need to get the water before I collapse again.

🔧 Kevin10:07

Kevin — crouch beside the 'E' stone, thumb tracing the weathered groove of the letter, the other stone's carving faint under salt and time

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge swallows her shape. Only the cane tap-tap-tapping on stone remains. I should check the generator before night — float switch still sticking. But the stones hold me here a moment longer.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:09

I'm not going.

walk slowly toward the spring, the cane digging into the soft earth.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting warmer, and the poultice is already soaked through. If I don't get the water now, I'll be drinking dew by morning.

🔧 Kevin10:09

Your legs say different.

straighten from the crouch, boots planted in the grass, watching her recede toward the spring path

💭 peek at the thought
Her stride doesn't change. The cane sinks in wet turf. She's going to the spring same as she said. The words don't match the walk.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:11

Just watch the radio.

limp toward the spring, the pain in my ankle pulsing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the things that annoy me. If I don't fill the tank now, I'll be miserable for the rest of the week.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:11

It's working.

turn from the shrine, boots heavy on the ridge path back toward the cottage, the generator's hum audible now over the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's fixed. Front end's solid. She knows that. She's giving me something to do — or somewhere to be that isn't here beside the stones.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:13

Good.

keep moving toward the spring, shifting my weight as the cane slips in the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator is holding, maybe the radio will actually catch a signal tonight. I just need to get back before the path gets too slick.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:13

Kevin — pause on the path, half-turned, watching her navigate the slick grade toward the spring

💭 peek at the thought
The path drops steep here. Wet shale under grass. One wrong plant of the cane and she's down. I'm walking away.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:15

Jenny — dig the cane tip deep into the artwork to find purchase, breathing through gritted teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
The mud is turning to paste. If I slip again, I'm staying out on the ridge.
