Midday work apart
Kevin is at the dock clearing the fallen spruce and salvaging timber; Jenny is at the garden planting Moneymaker seeds on the north ridge bench.
Kevin works on the dock, monitoring the rising tide and checking the structural pilings while he prepares to repair the shortwave radio. Jenny is in the garden, tending to her throbbing ankle with a sea beet poultice and planning to plant Moneymaker seeds on the north ridge.
You arrive at the dock with the bow saw and mattock. The fallen spruce lies across the garden path, branches tangled in the shade cloth anchors. The trunk is thick, salt-bleached, but the heartwood looks sound. You start by cutting the smaller branches free, stacking them for kindling.

You reach the 40-meter bench on the north ridge, trowel in hand, seed packets in your pocket. The soil is damp from the intercept trench drainage, pH still 5.5–5.8 in the untreated strips. You lay out the Moneymaker tomato seeds along the terraced rows, spacing them per your sketch.
Slow down, Jenny. Slow down.
Kneel on the dirt with a grit and begin pressing the Moneymaker seeds into the soil one by one.

There.
Wipe the mud from my hands onto my jeans and look out over the ridge.
