A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin attempts to patch the persistent leak at the northeast corner of the south dock but the heavy humidity hinders the epoxy curing. Jenny spends the time tending to her ankle and monitoring the garden seedlings while the tide recedes.

Kettle's boiling. Coffee?

walk onto the porch and lift the kettle off the stove, pour two tin mugs

💭 peek at the thought
Back in the porch. Kettle's on. Jenny's at the table with the seed tin. My hands still smell of creosote and wet clay from the overflow trench. Barometer's holding 992. Tide's out. The northeast corner seepage should be visible now — if the trench drained it.

🌿 Jenny13:03

Please. Black is fine.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone, shifting my swollen ankle to avoid pressure, and take the mug with trembling hands.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every heartbeat, but the smell of the coffee is the only thing feeling real right now.

🔧 Kevin13:04

Here.

set the tin mug on the table beside her notebook, steam rising black in the grey light

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Cold or pain or both. The ankle's not right — she walked the ridge on it yesterday, the cliff path today. Didn't say a word. Just sketched. I set the mug down careful so she doesn't have to reach.

🌿 Jenny13:07

Thanks.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug to stop the shaking and stare out at the overgrown weeds in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too quiet, like I'm made of glass today and might actually shatter.

🔧 Kevin13:07

Tide's out. Going to check the foundation seepage.

pull on my oilskin jacket from the hook and step out onto the path toward the northeast corner of the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Garden's still half weeds. Eleven months and I never built the sensory beds. She looks at it like it's a failure. Maybe it is. Barometer's steady. Tide's low. The northeast corner should be dry now if the trench worked.

🌿 Jenny13:09

Be careful on the rocks, they're slick.

Take a slow sip of the coffee and watch him own into the grey, then open the notebook to a blank page.

💭 peek at the thought
way shouldn't be going out alone with the air this heavy, but I can't stop him.

🔧 Kevin13:09

Aye.

pick my way down the slope toward the northeast foundation, boots testing each stone, the overflow channel trench visible ahead where the bitumen membrane was laid

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Always watches. Rocks are slick — clay and salt and last night's rain. I know. Been walking them fifteen years on ship decks worse than this. The trench cut is twenty feet from the corner, dug down to the clay lens. If the water table dropped, the seepage stops. If it didn't, I'm digging deeper.

🌿 Jenny13:13

I'll be here on the radio.

Sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found this morning, focusing on the salt-crusted edges to ignore the pain in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip and break if he doesn't watch where he steps on that clay.
