Pre-Storm Pressure

Kevin and Jenny stand by the south dock as the overcast sky thickens over the salt air. Jenny watches the barometer drop to 991 hPa while Kevin checks the tension on the new mooring ring lashings.

Kevin spent the morning at the dock, checking the tension on the mooring lines and the dinghy's storm anchor as the tide remained high. Jenny focused on the garden, attempting to prep the soil for the brush removal, but the heavy humidity and encroaching storm front made the work sluggish.

Five millibars since dawn. Swell's backing northeast. You see the crane manifest?

check the south piling sister brace bolts and the dock stringer scarf joint for movement

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropped five millibars since I last looked. Northeast swell building — I can feel it in the planks. The new ring lashings are holding but the mortise is still splintered oak held together by wedges and hope. If the supply boat comes in on that crane, the whole finger pier goes.

🌿 Jenny14:39

I haven't seen the manifest, just the grey water and the rising wind.

Trace the line on the barometer glass with a thumb, then pull my sketchbook from my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't come in eight days, those seeds will just rot in the damp anyway.

Manifest's on the radio log. Captain said fuel, flour, shower pump valve, antibiotics. Didn't say crane capacity.

pull the radio notebook from the kitchen shelf and flip to the last contact entry

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the same thing I am. The sketchbook means she's logged the rot pattern on the third plank — she's thinking structural, not just weather. Good. Means I don't have to say it.

way we'll be dragging them across the jetty one by one in the rain.

Sketch a quick map of the north ridge soil stability, marking where the clay might hold.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't lift the heavy crates, I'll have to haul the soil amendments by hand and my back will snap.

🔧 Kevin14:42

Crane boom reaches the garden path if the tide's high enough. Saves the dock. But the captain won't swing it over the cottage roof.

walk to the garden path switchback and check the intercept trench outflow at the north wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's already mapping the haul route. North ridge clay holds if the intercept trench keeps draining — but if this low deepens, the trench backs up and the slope goes. She knows that. She's marking where it might hold anyway.

way we'll have to move the brush from the half-weedy garden before the boat arrives.

Rub the pencil over the sketch, then look at the heirloom seed tin in my bag.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't swing over the roof, we'll have to clear the path for the weight of the lift.

🔧 Kevin14:44

Brush can wait. The dock won't.

check the dinghy's storm anchor warp tension and the doubled stern spring at the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
The garden's still half weeds because I talked about it for eleven months and never built it. She's looking at the seed tin — the heirloom packets I meant to plant last season, the season before. Now the supply boat's three days out and the barometer's falling and she's thinking about clearing brush for a crane that might not reach.

🌿 Jenny14:45

I'll clear the path tomorrow. I need the soil ready first.

Tighten the strap on the seed tin and stare at the grey clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is always the priority, but the seeds are the only thing that actually belongs to me.
