The first drops fall

The wind picks up, rattling the shutter, and the first heavy drops of the storm begin to hit the tin roof.

Kevin checked the dock mooring ring and found the oak wedges and steel doubler plate holding fast against the rising wind and swell. He returned to the cottage and shared coffee with Jenny while the barometer continued to fall.

🌿 Jenny15:56

Kevin, close the porch door! Now!

Limps to the porch to latch the door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming faster than the forecast, and those seeds aren't covered yet.

On it.

Pull the porch door shut and throw the latch, then step out onto the porch to check the mooring lines at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Door first, then check the mooring lines and generator.

🌿 Jenny15:57

Stay inside! The dinghy is already secured!

Grabs the doorframe, wincing as she shifts her weight off the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there now, he'll get way off by the surge.

🔧 Kevin15:58

Dock ring. Two minutes.

Step back inside, grab the oilskin from the hook, and head out the kitchen door toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the dinghy — I rigged the storm anchor and doubled lines myself. But the dock mooring ring took a beating last cycle. Need eyes on it before the surge peaks.

🌿 Jenny15:59

You're impossible! The pressure is already dropping!

Clutches the kitchen table, watching him disappear into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked and the tide is rising too fast.

🔧 Kevin16:00

Sixty seconds.

Move fast down the path to the dock, headlamp beam cutting the rain, checking the mooring ring mortise, the oak wedges, the four 150mm through-bolts on the steel doubler plate, the doubled stern spring and bow line tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's scared. The ankle, the storm, me walking into it. I'll check the ring, the pilings, the lines — be back before she counts to sixty.

🌿 Jenny16:01

Kevin, get back here! The wind is turning!

Limps to the window, watching the dinghy strain against the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
The surge is going to take the dock if he doesn't double back.

🔧 Kevin16:02

Holding. Coming in.

Turn and jog back up the path to the cottage, headlamp swinging, burst through the kitchen door and latch it against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest — barometer said it would. Tide surge comes early with this shift. Ring's holding, wedges tight, doubler plate bolts solid. Lines have chafe guards. Dinghy's riding the anchor warp, bow line slack for swell. Good. Back to her.

🌿 Jenny16:03

You're an idiot. Look at the sky.

Grabs a towel from the kitchen, her hands shaking as she reaches for him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's drenched to the bone and the tide is rising anyway.

🔧 Kevin16:04

Coffee. Now.

Strip off the oilskin, hang it on the hook, pull two tin mugs from the shelf, fill from the kettle on the stove, set one in front of her at the table, sit opposite with mine.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold, wet, shaking — ankle throbbing, fear riding her hard. Not the sky. Her. Coffee. Warmth. The rest can wait.
