Evening Meal Prep

The air is still heavy as the sun begins to dip. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen to prepare the evening meal.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the old shrine as the air grows heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. The water tank has reached its absolute 400-litre capacity, with the overflow channel now spurting a steady stream into the drainage trench. The tide is high, waves lapping hungrily at the bottom of the dock.

Engine held. Vibration's gone. How's the ankle?

wash hands at the sink, then pull the cast iron skillet from the hook

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's back. The kitchen smells like corned beef fat and rain. My hands still smell like diesel and salt from the Yanmar test, but the engine held steady under load — vibration's gone. That's one thing fixed. Now food, then the letter to Tom in the dry bag. Six days until the supply boat. Maybe this time it comes.

🌿 Jenny17:59

It's fine. Just tired.

Jenny winces slightly as she shifts her weight, then begins to slice a few hardy potatoes for the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
It's throbbing with every step, but I don't need him fussing over it.

🔧 Kevin18:00

Good. Coffee?

set the skillet on the stove, spoon corned beef fat into it, and let it melt while the potatoes hit the pan

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left side. The poultice helped but the swelling hasn't fully gone down. She won't say it hurts unless I ask, and sometimes not even then. I'll make the coffee strong tonight.

🌿 Jenny18:01

Please.

Jenny reaches for the tin pot, her movements slow and careful to avoid jarring the joint in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way would be nice, but I'm too drained for caffeine.

🔧 Kevin18:02

Water's hot. I'll pour.

fill the tin pot from the kettle on the stove, spoon coffee grounds in, and set it to steep while the potatoes fry

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving like something that's been cracked and put back together. The letter to Tom is still in the dry bag by the radio — I wrote it three nights ago but haven't sealed it. Six days until the supply boat. If it comes. If the skipper takes the mail.

🌿 Jenny18:03

Thanks.

Jenny sits at the small wooden table, watching the steam rise from the pot while the potatoes sizzle in the fat.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the smell is filling the room; it beats the scent of damp earth.

🔧 Kevin18:04

Carex counts done?

slide the fried potatoes and corned beef onto two tin plates, set one in front of her, and sit opposite with my own

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's easing. Barometer's rising — 982 and climbing. Means the front's moving through. Good for the garden, bad for the north ridge track if the clay's saturated. She's quiet tonight. Both of us are. The letter to Tom sits in the dry bag. I should seal it before the supply boat comes. If it comes.

🌿 Jenny18:05

mostly. The pH is lower than I hoped.

Jenny picks up her fork, pushing a small piece of potato while she watches the rain against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
done, but the ridge is a mess of mud and salt right now.
