The Pre-Boat Wait
Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch watching the heavy, grey air hang over the island. Jenny adjusts the poultice on her ankle while Kevin checks the barometer for the last time before the boat arrives.
Kevin fires the Yanmar engine and runs it under load to verify the integrity of the new bronze sleeve. Jenny heads to the upper ridge to survey drainage patterns and observe the soil composition under the heavy morning air.
Boat's due on the high tide. Two-hour window. Harbourmaster said wait — same as always.
tap the barometer glass with a calloused finger, then settle back on the porch step with mug in hand

Two hours isn't much if the swell picks up again.
Tighten the wrap around the sea much poultice on my ankle and open the notebook to the soil composition sketch.

Swell holds, we're fine. Swell builds, he waits offshore. Either way the radio works and he knows we're here.
lift mug, blow across the steam, take a slow sip

The radio won't tell me if the ridge will slide next week.
Trace the outline of the north slope in the sketch with a pencil pencil, looking for the cracks I missed.

Trench holds. Bed holds. You walked it with me.
set mug down on the step, pull the notebook closer, study her pencil line against the ridge contour

The soil is too acidic near the spring. It needs more lime than the trust promised.
Circle the drainage-point on the map, marking where the water is pooling.

Two bags left in the shed. Won't touch the spring line. Need the boat's resupply.
tap the circled point, nod once, reach for the pencil to add a second mark upstream

We'll use the last of the lime for the test pits. I can't afford a waste on the whole slope.
Rub the pencil lead with my thumb, looking at the grey horizon where the water meets the sea.

Test pits get lime. Slope gets time. Boat brings the rest.
draw a small square around her circled point, label it "TP-1" in block letters, hand the pencil back

Time doesn't fix drainage once the soil starts shifting.
Close the notebook with a soft thud, feeling the weight of the seed tin in my pocket.
