The Calm Before the Gale

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the rain turns to a heavy downpour. The wind howls through the radio mast, and the sound of the leaking shutter dominates the conversation.

The warm rain continues to fall in rhythmic bursts, drumming against the stone of the old shrine. The tide is rising steadily, licking at the lower rocks of the shore as Jenny sits against the shrine wall, her stomach growling from hunger while the sea-beet-honey poultice on her ankle begins to cool in the damp air.

🔧 Kevin22:44

Frame's working at the top corner. Greenheart sister's holding but the original timber's giving. Need to wedge it before the next swell hits.

grab two fresh cedar shims and the mallet from the workbench, move to the leaking shutter, drive shims into the widening gap at the top corner where the sister plate meets the frame

💭 peek at the thought
The bucket's half-full already and the storm hasn't even hit properly. Frame's moving — I can see the gap widening at the top corner where the greenheart sister meets the original timber. If that gives way, the whole wall breathes in.

🌿 Jenny22:45

Keep them tight. The wood is soft like a sponge in there.

Jenny watches him work, her hand instinctively sketching the grain of the weathered wood in the margin of her own.

💭 peek at the thought
If those shims don't hold, the whole wall is going to warp, and I'm too tired to fix the same leak twice.

🔧 Kevin22:48

Fir's rotten past the surface. Shims buy hours. Need through-bolts to the interior stud or a spreader plate. Come-along's on the dock.

drive the shims home hard with the mallet, check the gap closure with fingertips, then step back and eye the shutter's deflection under a gust

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the original fir's punky past the first inch. Shims won't bite long. Need longer bolts through to the interior stud, or a steel plate distributed across the face. But the come-along's on the dock and the tide's coming up fast.

🌿 Jenny22:49

Don't go to the dock yet. The tide is coming in too fast for that.

Jenny walks to the wall, tracing a finger over the damp patch where the water is already seeping through.

💭 peek at the thought
He always thinks about the hardware, but the rot is eating the island from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin22:49

Tide's on the pilings. Come-along's gone till ebb. Ratchet strap in the generator shed — if the door hasn't blown off.

turn toward the generator shed, pause at the doorway, listen to the wind load on the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's read the water right. Dock's already awash at the pilings — saw the foam line halfway up the north stringer when I checked the mooring ring this morning. Swell's building. Come-along's a write-off until the tide turns. Need another way to pull this shutter tight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:51

Stay inside. The wind is too sharp for the shed anyway.

Jenny grabs his arm, pulling him back toward the warmth of the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If the way door is gone, the tools are lost, and I'm not going out.

🔧 Kevin22:51

Ratchet's in the shed. But you're right — roof's loose, chain's the only hold.

let her pull me back into the kitchen, set the mallet on the table, reach for the tin mug of cooling broth

💭 peek at the thought
Her grip's firm on wet wool. She's not asking. The shed roof lifted last month — only the chain held it. If I go out there now the wind takes me or the door, and she's left with a broken shutter and no radio. She knows the math.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:53

Eat something. You're shaking more than the house is.

Jenny sits across from him, watching the rain blur the window, her hand tracing the rim of the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the shed isn't worth a broken leg right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:53

Broth's cold.

lift the mug, drink the congealed fat and salt in three swallows, set it down hard, pull the chair closer to the table's heat

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Hands have been trembling since the Yanmar test — fine vibration in the fingers that won't settle. Adrenaline or hunger or the storm pressure dropping in my chest. The broth's cold but the fat's still good. Tin E sits beside her notebook, heavy and silent.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:55

It's warm enough. I'll get you some bread.

Jenny reaches for the loaf on the counter, cutting a thick slice off despite the damp air.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so hungry he can't even taste the salt anymore.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:55

Tin E's still sealed.

take the bread from her, tear a chunk, chew slow while watching rain streak the windowpane

💭 peek at the thought
Bread's dense, sour, three days old — she baked it before the barometer started falling. Tin E on the table between us, rusted lid sealed, whatever's inside still waiting. She won't ask me to open it. Won't ask me to call the harbourmaster again. The letter to Tom in the ditch bag, the medevac forms signed. All the things we don't say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:57

What's in it really matters now, doesn't it?

Jenny places the tin on the table between them, its rusted edges catching the lamplight.

💭 peek at the thought
That tin has been sitting there longer than any of our plans.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin22:57

Could be coffee. Could be ballast.

reach for the church key on the shelf above the stove, hook the blade under the tin's lip, leverage the lid up slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me to open it. Finally. The tin's been on the table three days, heavy in my pack before that, pulled from the crate at the south beach. Salt ate the label. Could be coffee. Could be spare parts. Could be nothing. My hands are steady now — bread and broth and her watching.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:59

Hope it's the grandmother's mix.

Jenny leans forward, breath held, watching the metal creak against the seal.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's just old seeds, I'll lose my mind.
