Morning coffee and plans

Dawn light filters through rain-streaked windows. The kettle whistles on the stove. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tin mugs, the seed tin open between them, notebooks out. The barometer holds at 975 hPa. The tide is still rising outside, audible against the dock pilings.

Kevin runs the Yanmar engine at idle to charge the batteries and monitors the raw water pump under the steady rain. Jenny works on the north ridge to dig intercept trenches, though the saturated soil makes the earth heavy and difficult to displace.

🌿 Jenny23:27

The ridge is going to slide, Kevin. We need to move the water or the whole patch is lost.

make sketch: north ridge drainage plan.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too saturated; if I don't dig the trenches now, the seeds will just rot in the mud by tomorrow.

Intercept trench along the contour. Stone-lined, daylight to the slope. We'll need the mattock and the auger. You sketch, I'll dig.

Pour coffee into both mugs, set kettle aside, pull on oilskin jacket and boots.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's weeping at the cut face. If we don't intercept it, the garden goes with it. Barometer steady means we've got hours, not days.

🌿 Jenny23:29

Take the lime amendment, too. If the pH doesn't shift, the heirlooms won't stand a chance.

sketch the drainage layout and seed bed zones in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so ready to work, but he doesn't see the way the earth is turning.

🔧 Kevin23:35

Lime's in the shed, two sacks. I'll haul it up before the ground softens more.

Drink half the mug, set it down, grab the mattock from the corner, head out the porch door toward the garden shed.

💭 peek at the thought
Lime first, then trench. Soil's too acid for anything but weeds. She's thinking two steps ahead — beds, drainage, pH all at once.

🌿 Jenny23:37

Be careful on the slope, it's slicker than it looks.

draw a detailed map of the way trenches on the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get that lime out, the acidity will eat my grandmother's seeds alive.

🔧 Kevin23:39

Aye.

Pull the shed door open, heave both burlap sacks of lime onto the wheelbarrow, wrestle it around the cottage corner toward the north ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Clay goes to grease fast. One bad step and I'm sliding into the fence line.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:39

I'll start on the seed trays here. We need to be ready once the lime hits.

make sketch: north ridge drainage plan.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is already failing; if I don't get the drainage right, the north ridge will just be a bog.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:44

Shout if the trays need more soil mix.

Trudge up the switchback path, wheelbarrow wheels sinking in the wet clay, lime sacks shifting with each turn.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Parallel tracks. She handles the fine work, I move the heavy. The ridge won't wait for either of us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:45

I'll have the trays ready. We just need to stabilize the earth before it slides.

draw the contour lines for the intercept trench in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's strong, but the water is moving faster. I need to be precise or the whole ridge gives way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:47

(nothing — too far to speak without shouting)

Reach the first terrace, set the brake, start spreading lime in a wide arc over the prepared beds, working it in with the mattock blade.

💭 peek at the thought
Contour lines on paper. Contour lines in mud. Different beasts. But she sees it right — cut the water off at the pass, the rest follows.
