Afternoon Rain Lull

The rain tapers off to a light mist, leaving the air heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. You meet inside as the tide finally begins its slow retreat, revealing the rocks of the sea cave entrance.

Kevin tensioned three guy lines on the new spruce aerial mast, serving the ends with sail twine to prevent salt wicking. Jenny sketched sea beet gland density gradients while her ankle throbbed. A rat was heard scratching in the pantry behind stored food.

🌿 Jenny01:07

The boat is coming tomorrow. We need to check the radio again.

picks up the tin of seeds and traces the rusted rim with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is going out, but the soil is still a mess. I'm so hungry I could vibrate.

0800 on 2182. I'll key it then. First, tanks and sandbags.

walk to the back wall and check the rain tank level, then move to the foundation to assess sandbag placement

💭 peek at the thought
She's still on the boat. Radio check means she wants confirmation, not hope. I'll give her the frequency and the time, then get the catchment tanks and sandbags done before dark.

🌿 Jenny01:09

0800 is fine. way make sure theion is clear of the spruce.

sets the seed tin down on the table and stands up, wincing as her ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the mechanics of survival while the biology here is rotting away.

🔧 Kevin01:09

Sit down. I'll clear the spruce off the aerial line after the tanks.

check the rain tank gauge, then walk the cottage perimeter to inspect sandbag placement at the foundation corners

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle again. The antibiotics are working but the swelling hasn't gone down enough. She shouldn't be standing long.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:11

way don't let the wind catch the wire, I can't lose another transmission window.

sinks back into the chair, her eyes fixed on the sketch of the sea beet morphology on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks sitting down will stop the rot, but the island is still breathing through the floorboards.

🔧 Kevin01:11

Wire's getting three guy lines. Porch posts and the stove pipe bracket. It'll hold.

finish checking the last foundation corner, then head to the woodshed for the guy-line cord and tensioners

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wire. Last storm the aerial whipped and we lost two days of comms. I'll guy it off to the porch posts before 0800.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:13

way make sure they are tight. The salt eats through everything else here.

💭 peek at the thought
Three lines for a storm that hasn't<strong> arrived yet. He's optimistic.

🔧 Kevin01:14

Serving the ends with sail twine. Won't wick salt up the core.

cut three lengths of the new half-inch rope from the crate, whip and serve the ends with sail twine, then climb the porch roof to secure guy lines to the aerial mast and tension them to the porch posts and stove pipe bracket

💭 peek at the thought
Salt eats everything. She's not wrong. The last guy lines lasted six months before the cores rotted. These new ones from the crate are good three-strand — they'll last longer if I serve the ends proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:15

way don't overstretch them. The spruce is new.

sketches the area density gradient of the sea beet in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wire holds, maybe the radio will actually work tomorrow. I need a human voice.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:16

Just enough to stop the whip. Not enough to bend the stick.

tension each guy line by hand until the aerial wire has a slight catenary curve but the spruce mast shows no deflection at the step, then cleat them off and double-check the mast alignment

💭 peek at the thought
The spruce mast is green still. Too much tension and it'll bend or split at the step. She knows the boat better than she lets on.
