← Day 745

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Yanmar load test and south slope survey

Kevin is at the dock running the Yanmar under load in the dinghy; Jenny is on the hilltop completing her south slope pH survey and marking amendment zones.

The humidity thickens as the flat sky darkens, signaling a coming wet season storm. Kevin checks the dock pilings for stability against the rising tide, while Jenny monitors the north ridge for signs of the approaching front.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dinghy's transom, throttle in hand, the Yanmar idling smooth after the 12mm bolt repair. The prop shaft spins true, bronze sleeve holding. You ease the throttle up — quarter, half — watching the engine mounts, feeling for vibration through the hull. The dock planks are wet, sky flat grey. The supply boat is due in nine days. This engine has to hold.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Kevin — advance throttle to half, hold for ten minutes. Watch engine mounts, listen for vibration, check prop shaft alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
Third time's the charm, or it's scrap. Mounts held at idle. Now see if they hold under load.

🔧 Kevin03:12

Kevin — advance throttle to three-quarters, hold five minutes. Watch temperature, oil pressure, listen for any knock or vibration.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's holding. No vibration through the hull at half throttle. Mounts solid with the 12mm bolts. Time to push it.

🔧 Kevin03:16

Kevin — push to full throttle for two minutes. Monitor everything. Then bring it back to idle and shut down.

💭 peek at the thought
Three-quarters held clean. No knock, temperature steady, oil pressure good. The bronze sleeve and trued shaft are doing their job. One more test — full throttle, brief. If it holds there, the repair's done.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You crouch at the last auger hole on the south slope, recording the final pH reading: 5.7. The cedar stakes are driven, flagging tape bright against the grass. Your notebook holds the full gradient now — untreated 5.5–5.8, limed 6.8–7.0. Clouds are lowering, wind shifting southeast. You pack the auger, start back toward the cottage, the path slick underfoot.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Just a little further, then.

wipe the mud from the auger and slide it into the waterproof bag.

💭 peek at the thought
The acidity is too high for the grandmother's seeds; I need to get that lime down before the rain really breaks.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Jenny — stop at the ridge and watch the horizon line vanish.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning that heavy shade of purple again. If it hits hard, the slope will be a river.

🌿 Jenny03:15

Come on, Jenny.

tighten the straps on my bag and start walking toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind just dropped. I need to get back to the cottage before the first drop hits.
