The Rising Saturation

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the warm rain drums against the roof. Jenny rests her swollen ankle on a crate of dejected seeds while Kevin watches the barometer for a further drop in pressure.

The warm rain continues to fall steadily as the tide recedes, exposing the rocky flats. Kevin prepares for the radio check-in while Jenny struggles to manage the pain in her swelling ankle under the damp heat.

🌿 Jenny04:53

The barometer is dropping again. It's going to get worse before the boat even clears the harbor.

Jenny traces the outline of a leaf in the margin of her notebook, her fingers shaking slightly from the pain in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain doesn't stop, the south slope will be a swamp, and grandmother's seeds will rot before they even touch dirt.

Boat's not the problem. The dock is. South piling's moving on the flood tide.

Check the barometer reading, then walk to the dock to inspect the south piling at low tide.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 975 and steady an hour ago, now the needle's lazy-drifting south. Northeast swell won't care about the supply boat's schedule. Her ankle's holding heat through the bandage — infection's still working, or the bone's remembering.

🌿 Jenny04:55

Check the bolts, specifically the bronze ones—the salt is eating them fast.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, her ankle throbbing in time with the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock is shifting, the whole foundation is at risk, and I can't even walk down there properly to help him.

🔧 Kevin04:55

Bronze shackle housing's the weak link. Pin's free but the threads are gone. Dropped the replacement overboard last swap. Need to machine another or jury-rig.

Walk down to the dock, test the south piling's movement by hand, then inspect the shackle housing at the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracked every bolt I've driven. Knows the 10mm stainless held, the galvanized didn't. The bronze shackle pin I freed last week — housing's paper. She's not wrong.

🌿 Jenny04:57

We'll have to use the heavy wire from the shed for a temporary fix. It won't hold the tide.

Jenny pulls out her own and begins to draw the shackle mechanism, her movements slow and restricted by the pain in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't fix that shackle, the wayhy will drift the moment the next storm hits the island.

🔧 Kevin04:57

Wire'll hold the ring to the piling direct. Bypass the shackle. Stainless rod from crate can make a proper pin if I thread it. Greenheart collar's backup.

Head to the workshop shed for the heavy wire coil and the stainless rod, then return to the dock to rig the bypass.

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy wire's a tourniquet, not a cure. But it'll buy a tide cycle or three. She's drawing it out — good. Means she's thinking past the pain. The stainless rod from the supply crate (~300mm) could thread through the mortise if I tap it oversize. Or the greenheart offcuts for a wooden collar. Tide's falling. Time to work.

🌿 Jenny04:59

Make sure you wrap the wire twice. I don't want the ring slipping under the load.

Jenny stops drawing and watches him, her eyes fixed on the way the water rises in the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses the wire, the tension will shear through the wood if the tide pulls too hard again.

🔧 Kevin04:59

Twice round each, hard seized. I'll tar the contact points.

Retrieve the heavy galvanized wire coil and stainless rod from the workshop shed, then rig the wire bypass at the mooring ring — double wrap on ring and piling, seized tight, tar the bearing surfaces.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the load path. Twice round the ring, twice round the piling, seize the bitter ends. The ring's oak-wedged in the mortise — that's held. It's the shackle eye that's gone. Wire's 6mm galvanized, coil's in the shed. Stainless rod's on the shelf above the vice. Tide's still dropping. Twenty minutes of work before the flood pushes back.
