midday dock assessment

Rain falls hard from the west at 21°C. Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock's landward end where the ground is firm. Kevin holds the 300mm rod and die set; Jenny has her notebook with the fresh rot sketch and a bag of diseased seedlings. The tide is rising fast, water lapping at the first plank. They need to decide how to bolt the greenheart sisters to the south piling with the hardware they have.

Kevin and Jenny drilled pilot holes in the greenheart sister planks for the south dock piling repair. Kevin's drill work went cleanly despite his low roll, while Jenny's steady marking held true. They completed four pilot holes per side before pausing.

🌿 Jenny05:11

Use the 300mm rods. We need to way deep through the greenheart into the heart of the piling, or it won't hold the weight.

Lean against the way wall to offload my weight and mark the drill points with a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming and if we don't get these on now, the rot will take the whole jetty before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin05:11

300mm gets the depth. But die threads in end-grain are weak. The 220mm Perkins bolt — clean steel, re-threaded — holds better but might not reach. Your call.

lean the rod against the seawall, pull the pencil from behind my ear, and wait for her to mark the drill points

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the depth — the rot goes past the second piling, and the greenheart sisters need bite into sound timber. But 300mm rod with a die-cut thread on the end? That's marginal engagement in end-grain. If the nut strips, we lose the whole connection. The 220mm Perkins bolt with clean threads re-threaded to match... that's stronger metal, but shorter. Might not reach the piling's heart through the sister plank.

🌿 Jenny05:13

Use the 300mm. I'll pre-drill the pilot holes to stop the greenheart from splitting. We need the reach.

Trace the bolt pattern own the greenheart with the pencil, pressing hard despite the pulse in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If we use the short ones, they'll pull out the first time a own hits and I don't have the energy to fix it twice.

🔧 Kevin05:13

Two rods per sister. Four holes each side. Pilot first, then the auger. I'll run the drill.

set the rod and die down on the dry plank, pull the cordless drill from my belt, and wait for her to finish marking

💭 peek at the thought
She's decided. 300mm rods, pilot holes, reach over thread strength. She's the one who'll be living with this dock — her call. The rain's washing her pencil marks almost as fast as she makes them.

🌿 Jenny05:15

Right. way don't go too fast, or you'll strip the wood.

Lift the pencil to mark the last point, then lean weight against the timber to steady it.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping for once. I just need to finish this before the swelling gets.

🔧 Kevin05:15

Slow speed. High torque. Back out every inch to clear chips.

brace the drill against my shoulder, line up the bit on her first mark, and start the first pilot hole

💭 peek at the thought
She's marking the last point. Rain's sheeting off her hair, pencil moving careful despite the shake in her fingers. Good layout — staggered pattern, bolts offset so they don't meet in the piling's heart. She knows timber.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:17

Watch the wood. If it starts to splinter, stop immediately.

Watch the bit bite into the greenheart, wood curls falling own my work boots.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration of the drill is travelling right up my leg and it's making the infection throb.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:17

Holding clean. Half inch deep.

ease the drill back to clear chips, blow the hole out, and plunge for the second inch

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart's dense as iron. The bit screams a little as it bites — high-pitched whine of carbide on silica-heavy grain. Wood curls peel off tight and hot, smoking where they land on my boot. No splintering yet. She's watching close, one hand braced on the sister plank, the other hovering near the drill like she'd catch it if it wandered.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:21

Keep it steady. We need that hole straight for the 300mm bolts to seat.

Lean my weight on the cane to hide the wince in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing better than I expected, but the wood is still too soft near the edge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:21

Straight as I can make it. You want the other three pilots now, or step up to the auger on this one?

finish the pilot to full depth, back it out slow, and blow the hole clean

💭 peek at the thought
Straight hole in greenheart with a hand drill — the bit wants to wander with the grain spiral. I'm muscling it, forearm burning, feeling every hard patch and soft streak through the chuck. Rain's running down the bit, turning chips to slurry. She's right about the ankle; she's putting more weight on that cane than she admits.
