The Rain and the Tide

The rain continues to pour as the tide reaches its lowest point, revealing the kelp-strewn floor of the southern bay.

Kevin tested the Yanmar in the dinghy at mid-morning slack, confirming the vibration fix held under load. Jenny inspected the south slope soil stability and found accelerating salt encroachment on the southwest garden corner, then sketched drainage patterns near the new wall.

Going to check the north trench and intercept drain. Be back before the tide turns.

walk up to the north foundation trench and intercept drain

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The tide's down far enough to check the north foundation trench and the intercept drain without wading. Rain's heavy but the ground's already saturated — won't make it worse. Yanmar test can wait until the slack holds steady. First, see what the king tide did to the drainage.

Take the radio. The rocks will be slick.

watch him own into the grey, then pick up my pencil to sketch the way the water is pooling near the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked to the bone, and that slope is already a way waiting.

Radio's in my pocket.

pull the shortwave radio from the shelf, clip it to my belt, and head out toward the north foundation trench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The limestone shelves go greasy in this rain. Radio goes in the pocket.

🌿 Jenny09:27

Watch your footing.

sit on the porch step and rub my aching ankle, watching the rain turn the garden into a slurry.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he has the radio, though the Signal won't stop the earth from giving way.

🔧 Kevin09:27

Stay off it. I'll be back before the tide turns.

continue up the slope toward the north foundation trench, picking my way over the slick rock

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle's still bad. She shouldn't be out on the porch step in this. But she won't take the hint to stay inside.

🌿 Jenny09:29

Don't stay out long.

watch him disappear into the mist, then open my notebook to sketch the way the water is carving a channel near the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too way for his own good; that slope is a deatrap today.

🔧 Kevin09:29

Kevin — walk back down the slope toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Trench held. Intercept drain's running clean — water's moving through the gravel bed, not pooling at the foundation. King tide didn't breach the bitumen membrane. Clay's weeping at the 40cm mark same as before, no new seepage. Cedar stakes at the windward edge have shifted maybe two centimeters; need re-driving when the ground firms. Good enough for now.

🌿 Jenny09:35

You're soaked.

stand up from the porch step, feeling the weakness in my legs, and head for a towel.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks like a drowned rat. I hope he didn't take a tumble.

Trench held. Drain's running clean. No new seepage at the foundation. Stakes shifted — need re-driving when the ground firms.

hang the radio back on its shelf, peel off the wet oilskin, and reach for a dry towel

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. Ankle's swollen worse from the walk to the porch step. Towel won't fix either.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:37

Good. The salt's getting worse on the southwest corner.

watch him dry off by the wood stove, then grab my pencil to note the trench conditions in the margin of my field notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The ground's still soft. I should mark that instability in the soil sketch.
