The Approaching Front

Kevin returns to the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain fall from the thickening sky.

The air remains heavy and still as the pressure continues its slow drop. The tide is out, providing a forty-minute window of work on the south slope before the water begins to turn back in.

🔧 Kevin10:52

Kevin — walk up to the cottage porch, wipe boots on the mat, step inside and set the mattock and auger against the wall

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's coming down harder than the barometer suggested. Trench walls will slump if I don't get the clay shored before the tide turns again. Need to move.

🌿 Jenny10:53

You're early. The drainage is going to be a mess if it doesn't clear up soon.

Lean against the doorframe, wince as I shift weight off my left foot, and watch the rain hit the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming too fast for me to stay dry, and my ankle is throbbing with every step.

🔧 Kevin10:54

Tide's still out. Got forty minutes before it turns. The auger bit's clogging on buried timber at forty centimetres — hit it twice yesterday.

pull the notebook from the shelf, flip to the south slope sketch, mark the undermining points with a pencil

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's already weeping at the trench bottom. Another hour and the auger won't pull clean. Should've started earlier.

🌿 Jenny10:55

It's probably the old roots from the garden wall shifting.

Trace the edge of the sketch on the kitchen table, then start to rub the swollen skin around my own.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's timber that shallow, the soil stability there is a joke for the seeds anyway.

🔧 Kevin10:59

Not roots. Clay's saturated below the trench line. The whole face is sliding on the blue band at forty centimetres.

tap the sketch at the iron band notation, then set the pencil down and pull the kettle toward the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Roots from the wall, maybe. But the auger bit was clean when I pulled it — no fiber, just wet clay packed tight around the flights. That's not roots. That's the slope moving.

🌿 Jenny11:03

Then the north ridge is useless for today. I need something stable anyway.

Sit heavily in the chair, hiss through my teeth as the ankle pulses, and watch the kettle start to steam.

💭 peek at the thought
If the clay is sliding at that depth, grandmother's seeds will just wash away into the sea.

🔧 Kevin11:03

North ridge holds. Three cribbing courses and the tarp lining took the last storm. You're not walking that slope today.

fill the tin mugs from the kettle, set one on the table in front of her, sit opposite with the other

💭 peek at the thought
She's not stopping. Ankle's bad and she's still looking for work. The north ridge beds can wait — they're on stable clay. The south slope's the one breathing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:05

Good. My own wouldn't have liked the thirty-degree-degree incline today anyway.

Reach for the mug, wrap both hands around the warmth, and stare out at the grey-slicked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ridge holds, I can finally find a spot for the tin before the supply boat comes.
