Morning of Day 752

The warm rain tapers off, leaving the air heavy with the smell of damp wood. The supply boat is now one day away.

The morning air is heavy and still as the tide begins its retreat from the shore. Kevin checks the water levels and prepares for the upcoming supply boat, while Jenny manages the persistent pain in her ankle infection with a fresh poultice.

🌿 Jenny12:31

The tide is coming in high. We need to secure the lines before the dark.

Walk to the kitchen to check the moisture in the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll be out of salt for the poultice and the infection will go to the bone.

Finishing the cut. Then I'll double the stern spring and check the bow line slack.

keep sawing the greenheart section, working to complete the three-foot cut for the northeast stringer repair

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing hard against the pilings. Need to finish this cut and get the sister plate bolted before the water gets any higher. Jenny's right about the lines.

🌿 Jenny12:33

Just make sure the tension is right for the swell.

Open the grandmother's seed tin and inspect the heirloom packets for damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wood he doesn't even see I'm shaking.

Blade's binding. Grain's twisted. Be another few minutes.

bear down on the saw, teeth catching in the dense grain, working to finish the cut through the three-foot greenheart section

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart's eating the blade. Tide's not waiting. Need to get this bolted and move to the lines.

🌿 Jenny12:37

Take your time. The tide isn't going anywhere.

Trace the edge of a seed packet, checking for any softening or mold.

💭 peek at the thought
Every minute he spends fighting that wood is another minute I feel the heat pulsing in my ankle.

🔧 Kevin12:37

Nearly through.

make the final strokes, the saw breaking through the last of the greenheart, then set the saw aside and lift the cut section to check the end grain

💭 peek at the thought
She's calm. Steadier than me. The sawdust tastes like salt and old iron. Just finish the cut.

🌿 Jenny12:39

Check the fit against the bracket.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts under weight.

💭 peek at the thought
way. If that cut doesn't fit, I'm going to lose it.

🔧 Kevin12:39

Right.

carry the cut greenheart section to the northeast stringer, hold it against the rotted plank and the piling bracket, checking the fit and alignment

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding the limp. Ankle's not right. But she's on her feet. Fit the sister, bolt it, then lines.

🌿 Jenny12:41

Mark the cut line before the light goes.

Sit on the kitchen chair and open the seed tin to look at the heirloom.

💭 peek at the thought
It's a perfect fit. He always gets it right with the wood.

🔧 Kevin12:41

Marking now.

pull the pencil from my pocket and scribe the bolt hole positions on the greenheart sister where it meets the stringer and the piling bracket

💭 peek at the thought
Light's fading fast. Mark it, drill, bolt. Then the lines before full dark.
