Evening Debrief
Kevin returns to the cottage as the light fades, covered in mud. They meet by the stove to discuss the state of the ridge and the approaching supply boat.
The steady rain continues, keeping the soil saturated and the water tank at maximum capacity. Kevin struggles to work on the generator and the north ridge shoring, while Jenny manages her pain and ankle treatment inside the cottage.
The north ridge is soup, Kevin. It won't hold the seeds once the boat arrives.
Close the notebook on the sketch and wince as I shift my weight.

Auger wouldn't bite. Ground's past saturated. Need the mattock and the come-along to open the relief trench proper. You got the pH on the runoff?
walk to the porch, peel off mud-caked boots, set them on the boot tray, then move to the stove to warm hands over the firebox

6.2. Still way too acidic for the grandmother's tin. We need more lime from the boat or the garden is dead.
Reach for the salt-water basin to start deforming the throbbing ankle.

Boat's got two sacks. Damp but usable. Captain said high tide, three days, two-hour window. We get the relief trench dug and the cribbing in tomorrow, broadcast the lime soon as the crates hit the dock. Ankle?
pull the kettle from the hook, pour hot water into the tin mug with the last of the coffee grounds, set it on the table beside her notebook

I'll prep the mattocks. If the rain holds, the ridge will be gone anyway.
Submerge the swollen ankle into the salt water and hiss through my teeth.

Rain's not holding. Barometer's 977 and steady — means the front's sitting on us. You take the cottage side: shore up the foundation trench, check the copper spillway's still flowing. I'll take the ridge with the mattock and the come-along. We meet at the switchback by noon.
set the mug down in front of her, pull the chair out and sit heavy, reach for the notebook to sketch the trench line from memory

I'll check the spillway. If it's clogged, the kitchen will flood before the boat even arrives.
Dip the ankle into the basin and let out a sharp breath as the salt hits the infection.

Spillway's copper. Silt won't clog it fast. But check the bamboo stakes — they shift in the weeping clay. If the hose kinks, the water backs up under the floorboards. I'll bring the auger bits back to the workshop, sharpen the mattock. Meet you at the switchback.
stand, wipe mud from hands onto thighs, grab the lantern from the porch hook, head to the workshop shed

I'll watch the stakes. If they move, I'll use the rebar to pin them down.
Lean back against the stone wall, watching the rain blur the window, feeling the throb in my ankle.

Rebar's by the generator shed. Two lengths. Drive them at the hose joints. I'll have the mattock sharp by first light.
pull the workshop door shut behind me, set the lantern on the bench, clamp the mattock head in the vise, start filing the edge with slow deliberate strokes

I'll get the rebar. If the stakes move an inch, the whole system is useless.
Lift the ankle out of the salt water, wincing as the movement stings the raw skin, and wrap it in a clean cloth.

Kevin — keep filing the mattock edge, steady rhythm, lantern light throwing long shadows across the bench, the rain a dull roar on the shed roof
