Midday Lullness

The air remains heavy as the barometer continues to drop. The tide is high, covering the lower dock pilings.

The rain continues its steady rhythm, turning the island's paths into slick clay tracks. Kevin navigated the ridge trail to check the spring intake, battling the slippery mud on the upper slopes, while Jenny remained at the cottage, managing her ankle with salt water and watching the water pool against the stone foundation.

🌿 Jenny18:01

The water is coming too high today. We need to check the intake.

Sit on the porch steps, nursing my ankle, and sketch the way the rain pools against the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any further, the north ridge is going to slide, and my grandmother's seeds will just rot away into the salt.

I'll go. You stay off that ankle.

walk to the spring

💭 peek at the thought
The intake at the spring — if the tide's pushing back up the runoff channel, we'll get salt in the tank. Need to check the overflow and the flap valve before the next high tide cycles.

way watch the mud flats; the path will be slick as glass.

Watch him go, then start debriding my ankle with the basin of salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but he's just avoiding the silence in the kitchen.

Taking the ridge trail.

walk up the ridge trail toward the spring

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the clay shelf below the spring goes treacherous when the tide pushes up. Take the long way along the ridge if the flats are covered.

🌿 Jenny18:05

Be careful on the clay, it's saturated.

Soak the ankle in the salt water and wince at the sting.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge trail is a mess right now; he's going to slip and break something.

Kevin — continue up the ridge trail toward the spring

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's been weeping for days. Each step sinks. Boots are heavy with it. Ridge trail holds better — root-bound, less slip.

🌿 Jenny18:07

Watch out for the loose way near the bend!

Lean back against the whitewashed stone and watch the rain blur the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for that footing; the slope won't hold.

🔧 Kevin18:08

Kevin — slow down at the third switchback, test footing on the root mat, edge along the inside of the trail

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the slide zone — third switchback where the spruce root mat peeled last winter. Slow through there. Test each foot.
