A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
Kevin attempts to dig a test pit at the northeast foundation to find the depth of the seep, but the saturated soil is too heavy and the hand trowel head snaps under the pressure, leaving the tool buried in the mud. Jenny watches from the porch, clutching the tin of seeds as her ankle throbs, and she winces when shifting her weight as the ground near the slope begins to shift.
The water tank is at capacity, Kevin. We need to reinforce the southings before the next tide comes in.
I sit at the kitchen table and begin sketching the morphology of the sea beet leaves, my pencil moving rhythmically against the paper despite the smell of damp earth.

Tank's full. Overflow's running clean?
Walk to the back wall and check the rain tank overflow pipe where it exits through the stone, watching for blockage or backflow.

It's clear for now. But the sediment in the basin is rising.
I look up from my sketch, tapping the pencil against my chin, as I feel the throbbing in my ankle.

Basin's taking foundation fines. Northeast corner again.
Grab the hand trowel and bucket from the porch, head outside to the northeast foundation corner where the overflow basin sits, and start digging a test pit to see how deep the seep runs.

Watch out for the root ball. The whole area is coming down to a slope.
I stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle shifts, and grab the tin of grandmother's seeds from the table, feeling the weight of them in my palm.

You're not hauling that tin up the ridge if the slope lets go.
Kneel at the northeast corner, trowel into the saturated soil beside the foundation stones, and feel for the tamarind roots — checking if they're still anchored or sliding with the clay.

I won't let them go. But we need to see how deep the water is sitting.
I walk out to the porch, leaning my weight on the good leg, and watch him dig while the wind picks up.
