The Storm Sets In

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage as the first gusts of wind pick up. The barometer begins to drop more rapidly.

Kevin welded the new east shutter pin and installed it before dark, securing the cottage against the approaching front. Jenny completed her sea cave clay stratification sketches and prepared a fresh sea beet poultice for her ankle. The barometer held steady at 980 hPa but clouds darkened rapidly overhead.

🔧 Kevin21:22

Front's accelerating. East shutter's still unpinned. Going to weld it now while there's light.

grab the welder, spare pin stock, and 10mm through-bolts from the shelf; head out to the east shutter on the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting. Barometer's falling faster now — she'll feel it in her ankle before the radio picks up anything. Need to get the east shutter pinned before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny21:23

Take the magnet. If you lose those bolts in the grass, I'm not helping you in the dark.

Sit on the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a stool, and open the own to sketch the sea cave's clay layers before the light fails.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to drop the bolts in the mud if he isn't careful. My ankle is screaming from the pressure.

🔧 Kevin21:25

Magnet's in the roll. Be back before full dark.

snatch the magnetic tray from the tool roll by the generator; step out onto the porch and cross to the east shutter, setting the tray on the sill

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Lost two bolts in the long grass last month — cost me an hour and a skinned knuckle. Magnet's in the tool roll by the generator.

🌿 Jenny21:25

Watch the sky. The barometer is dropping too fast.

major back against the chair and begin sketching the stratified layers of the cave floor in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up faster than he thinks. If that rain starts, the clay will be a mess anyway.

🔧 Kevin21:27

Yeah.

clamp the new pin stock in the vise on the porch rail; strike an arc and tack-weld the pin to the hinge bracket, working fast before the gusts catch the slag

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Dropped four millibars in the last hour. Southwest's backing south — that'll drive the tide up the foundation trench.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:27

Hurry it up. The clouds are turning a nasty shade.

Focus on the pencil lead, drawing the distinct boundaries of the iron-rich clay bands while ignoring the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's rushing it. That weld is going to be brittle if the salt hits it too fast.

🔧 Kevin21:28

Kevin — run the root pass up the pin shank, then the fill, then the cap; chip slag between passes; test the pin rotation — smooth, no bind

💭 peek at the thought
Tack holds. Need the full bead now — three passes, root to cap. Wind's tearing the shielding gas but the flux core'll burn through. Sky's going bruised purple at the horizon.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:29

It holds. Get the tools in before the rain starts.

Close the notebook, mark the page, and stand slowly to get the poultice for my own.

💭 peek at the thought
It looks solid enough. Now we just need to get inside before the sky really opens up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:30

Tools in. You need the cold pack on that before supper.

sweep the magnetic tray off the sill, bolts clacking into it; grab the welder and vise handles; cross the porch at a jog and shoulder through the cottage door

💭 peek at the thought
Pin's solid. Bolts in the tray. Rain's close — can smell it in the wind shift. She's moving slow. Ankle's worse than she'll say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:31

I know. Just leave the wet stuff on the porch.

Step into the kitchen, limping to the table to start prepping the sea much leaves for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the cold. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed in a vice.
