the keeper's cottage · day 761 · evening

The rain breaks

The first heavy drops hit the hot dust, followed by a sharp wind that picks up from the east, carrying the scent of the sea.

Kevin used the dry window to finish the spruce clearance project, successfully splitting the rounds and securing the wall props. Jenny stayed at the cottage, struggling to manage her pain and organize supplies while the air pressure continued to drop.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Storm's building. East wind on a falling barometer. We batten down now — cottage, dinghy, dock — before high tide.

Walk to the cottage porch and secure the storm lantern, then check the shortwave radio aerial tension and batten the roof tarp battens.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted east. Storm's coming in fast on the dropping pressure. Need to secure the cottage and dock before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny01:25

I'll move the seeds inside. Don't let the wind catch the tarp.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and limp to the kitchen to retrieve grandmother's tin from the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that wind shifts north, the north ridge soil will be a mudslide by morning.

🔧 Kevin01:26

Tarp's battened. I'll double the dinghy lines and check the intercept trench pump. You get the seeds dry.

Walk to the garden and reinforce the shade cloth anchor points with the remaining timber strips, then head to the dock to double the dinghy stern spring and bow lines around the mooring ring and north piling.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. Ankle's not right. I'll secure the tarp and the dinghy, then check the trench pumping before the tide comes up.

🌿 Jenny01:29

Just be careful on the dock. The swell is coming in faster than the forecast.

set the tin on the kitchen table and sit heavily, watching the clouds turn the sky a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'm stuck here with a tin of ghosts that won't grow.

🔧 Kevin01:29

Won't stay out there long. Just verify the ring and the south brace, then back.

Walk down to the dock, inspect the mooring ring mortise and the oak wedges, check the south piling sister brace and the 150mm through-bolt for movement, then return to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — swell's building quick. Dock's the dangerous place now. I'll check the mooring ring and the south piling brace, then get back to the cottage.

🌿 Jenny01:31

The pressure is too low for comfort. Stay off the porch tonight.

pull the blanket tighter around my leg and watch the wood stove, listening for the first real crack of thunder on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is howling through the stone gaps; it sounds like the island is trying to speak.

🔧 Kevin01:31

Porch is shut. I'll weld the east shutter pin now, pump the trench at slack, then we ride it out inside.

Retrieve the welder and bronze stock from the workshop, set up at the east shutter, and weld the new bronze pin into the hinge, verifying free rotation.

💭 peek at the thought
Porch is exposed. She'll be safer inside. I'll finish the shutter pin weld and the trench check, then we both stay in the main room.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:33

Be careful with the sparks. The air is getting heavy in the kitchen.

lean back against the stone wall, watching the light from the doorway, and feel the dull throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of hot metal is sharp, cutting through the scent of the coming rain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:33

Door cracked on the lee. Welding now.

Weld the new bronze pin into the east shutter hinge with the spare bronze stock, verify free rotation, then grab the manual pump and head to the intercept trench at the northeast foundation to pump it out at slack tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Sparks and heavy air — she's right. Ventilation's poor with the door battened. I'll weld fast, keep the door cracked on the lee side, then pump the trench before the tide fills it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:35

Don't let the sparks hit the dry grass. The tide is already coming up fast.

adjust the poultice on my ankle, wincing at the movement, and watch the shadows dance from the light.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the welder is the only thing cutting out the rising wind.
