EVENING

The stillness finally breaks as the first cool gust of wind rolls in from the sea. The rhythmic drumming of rain begins on the roof, signaling the arrival of the storm the barometer anticipated.

The dry heat breaks as a sudden squall sweeps across the island, bringing a wall of heavy rain. Kevin climbs to the cottage roof to secure the tarps, while Jenny retreats to the porch to watch the storm roll in.

🔧 Kevin02:17

Storm's breaking. Going to batten the shutters and check the generator oil.

walk to the east shutter and secure it with the 10mm through-bolt, then head to the generator shed to check oil level and let it cool if it's been running

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer was right. Need to secure the cottage and check the generator before the wind picks up proper.

🌿 Jenny02:19

Check the fuel filter too, I don't want grit in the intake.

Sit up on the porch chair, adjusting the poultice on my ankle, and reach for the sketchbook to capture the cloud formation.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than the log suggested; if the wind shifts north, the north slope will wash out the trench.

🔧 Kevin02:19

Filter too. Back in a minute.

walk to the generator shed, check oil level first, then inspect and clean the fuel filter housing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the filter. Grit's been a problem since the supply boat fuel drums sat in the swell. Generator's only as good as what feeds it.

🌿 Jenny02:23

I'll check the north ridge intercept trench while you're at it.

Grab my field notebook and walk toward the garden, stepping carefully on the slick boards.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator's running hot enough to need cooling after that load test. I should map the drainage patterns while he's gone.

🔧 Kevin02:23

Take the radio. Channel 16. Shout if the trench is moving.

finish checking the generator fuel filter, wipe the housing clean, reassemble and tighten the clamp, then head back toward the cottage to secure the west shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be walking the north ridge on a bad ankle in this weather. But she'll go anyway. At least she took the notebook.

🌿 Jenny02:25

I've got the radio.

Pick up the shortwave from the shelf and move toward the porch, keeping an eye on my throbbing ankle with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this rain hits hard, the north-slope soil is going to soup again.

🔧 Kevin02:25

Kevin — walk to the west shutter, drive the longer stainless through-bolt through the hinge mortise with washers and nyloc nut, check the seal sits tight against the frame

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Radio's with her. Now get the west shutter dogged down before the wind shifts round to the west proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:27

I'm watching the clouds.

way on the porch steps, pulling the notebook to my lap, and watch the first heavy drops hit the dust.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is turning that heavy, way grey before a real blow. If the tide rises any higher, the north garden is a wash.

🔧 Kevin02:27

Kevin — climb onto the porch roof via the ladder, check the heavy canvas tarp battening over the west ridge and chimney flashing, re-tension any loose timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
West shutter's holding. Bolt seated. Frame's tight. Rain's coming down proper now. Need to check the roof tarp battening on the chimney flashing — that's the weak spot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:29

Watch out up there, the shingles are slick.

lean back against the whitewashed stone, wincing as my ankle shifts, and watch the sky darken over the island.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now. If that tarp doesn't hold, the salt-marsh sketches will be lost to runoff.
