Evening at the keeper's cottage

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch steps as the light fails. The generator hums from the shed. A pot of limpet broth steams on the stove. The barometer reads 993 hPa, steady. The supply boat is due in nine days at high tide.

The air is heavy and still, the 31°C heat pressing down on the cottage. Jenny sits on the porch steps, her leg elevated on a crate, watching the barometer needle with a weary gaze. Kevin finishes his broth, sets the mug on the step, and retreats inside to monitor the radio, the static hiss of the shortwave filling the room.

🌿 Jenny04:57

The pressure is going to drop before the morning.

Sketch a quick profile of the tide pool pH in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is rising in the pools; it must be the mineral runoff or just the heat. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin04:57

Aye. Generator's got half a tank. Water's full. Dinghy's tied double. What else you want battened before dark?

sip broth from tin mug, watching the treeline where wind might show first

💭 peek at the thought
She's read the same barometer I have. The needle hasn't moved in six hours — that's the dangerous part. Not rising, not falling. Just holding its breath.

🌿 Jenny04:59

Just check the tarp on the seed tin one last time. The corner looks loose.

Wince and shift weight to the good ankle while standing up.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the list again while I'm just trying to keep my leg from throbbing.

🔧 Kevin04:59

On it. You stay off that ankle.

set mug down, stand, walk to the garden shed where the heirloom seed tin sits under the spare tarp, check the loose corner and re-stake it with a timber strip

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it less today. The antibiotics are working, or she's just better at hiding it. Either way, she noticed the tarp corner from the porch — sharper eyes than me at dusk.

🌿 Jenny05:01

Thank you. The corner's fixed.

Make an ankle brace adjustment and apply fresh sea beet poultice. </think>THOUGHT: He didn't notice the swelling in my calf. Still thank him for the care. Make an ankle poultice with sea beet and mint, re-wrap the brace tight.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't notice the swollen red patches creeping up my calf. Not that it matters.

Radio check at nine. You want first watch or second?

pick up my mug, lean against the doorframe, gaze out at the darkening water

💭 peek at the thought
She's done that three times today. The poultice holds the heat, draws the poison. She thinks I don't see her wince when she presses the gauze down. I see.

🌿 Jenny05:03

Second. I'm exhausted.

Sit down on the porch steps and elevate my leg on a crate.

💭 peek at the thought
Second watch. I need to sleep if my ankle will stop throbbing.

🔧 Kevin05:03

Wake me if the barometer moves. Either way.

finish the broth, set the mug on the step, go inside to the radio shelf and power on the shortwave, dial to 2182, adjust the squelch, settle into the chair with the logbook open

💭 peek at the thought
First watch it is. Four hours of generator hum and shortwave static. Might catch Tom's frequency if the skip's right. Might not. Either way the night's long enough for thinking.

🌿 Jenny05:05

I'll keep an eye on the glass.

Watch the needle on the barometer while the pain pulses in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio static is like the heat. I just want to hear a voice.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:05

(nothing — just turn the volume knob a hair lower, let the white noise settle)

write the time and frequency in the radio log, 2182, 20:47, nil heard, then fold arms and listen

💭 peek at the thought
The static hisses, low and patient. 2182 quiet — no Maydays, no chatter, just the ionosphere breathing. Log shows last contact three days ago. Supply boat captain said three days at high tide, two-hour window. That puts him tomorrow if he kept schedule. Barometer at 993 says he might not.
