The Rain Persists
Kevin and Jenny wait inside for the weather to break, the water tank full and the tide beginning to turn.
The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof as the water tank reaches its 400-litre capacity. The ground is saturated, turning the soil around the cottage foundation into a slick, treacherous slurry, and the overflow channel is weeping as water seeps through the foundation stones.
The tank is full. We don't need to worry about water for a while.
Sketch the way the rain clouds are pooling over the ridge.

Overflow's eating the foundation again. Needs the copper spillway extended before dark.
walk to the back wall, check the overflow channel where it meets the foundation

I'll get the copper sheeting from the shed, but you need to clear the channel while I cut the length.
Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts onto my good leg.

I'll clear it. You sit.
step out onto the porch, pull the garden fork from the wall, and start scraping mud and debris from the overflow channel where it meets the northeast corner

Don't overdo it, the mud is slicker than it looks
Sit at the kitchen table, open the notebook, and begin sketching the pattern of the rain on the glass.

Mud's the least of it. Clay under the channel's weeping again. Trench didn't hold.
keep scraping the channel clear, working the fork tines along the overflow path to expose the copper spillway inlet, watching where water seeps through the foundation stones

I'll get the sealant and the copper. If the earth is shifting, we might need to

Copper and sealant won't hold if the ground keeps walking. But do it anyway — buys us the next storm.
lever a flat stone up from the channel bottom, test the clay beneath with the fork tip, feel for give

I'll get the materials. Just watch out for the rocks under your feet.
Walk to the shed, limping slightly, and search for the way sheeting and the sealant.

Copper's in the shed. Lead's on the porch. I know where they are.
drive the fork handle into the channel bed, use it as a probe to trace the soft zone along the foundation line, marking the weep points with chalk from my pocket
