Evening storm-fall

Inside the cottage, the sound of rain on the roof is deafening. Kevin and Jenny sit by the table, the smell of wet clothes filling the room as the wind rumbles the shutters.

Kevin and Jenny discussed the barometer and garden conditions, then separated to work on their individual tasks. Kevin inspected the east tank epoxy repair at high tide and checked the generator, while Jenny examined the heirloom seed tin for moisture and tested soil pH near the garden wall.

🌿 Jenny07:43

The air is too thick to breathe today.

Jenny reaches under the table and opens the heirloom seed tin to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing, and if this humidity gets worse, the seeds will rot before they ever hit the dirt.

🔧 Kevin07:43

Barometer's holding at 983. Not dropping like last week.

pull off wet boots and set them by the stove, then reach for the tin mug of cold coffee on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the seed tin again. Third time this week. The humidity's getting to everything — and to her.

🌿 Jenny07:45

It's not holding. The pressure is shifting.

Jenny runs a thumb over the paper packets in the tin, feeling for any dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it doesn't matter, but the clouds are the color of a bruise.

🔧 Kevin07:45

The needle hasn't moved in two hours. I watched it.

take a slow sip of the cold coffee, eyes on the barometer above the radio

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it in her bones before the instruments show it. Always has.

🌿 Jenny07:47

That's the problem. It's the calm before the surge.

Jenny closes the tin with a sharp click and looks out at the half-weeded garden through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The needle always lies right before the sky breaks.

🔧 Kevin07:47

The surge comes, we batten. Same as always.

set the mug down and stand, walking to the window to look at the garden myself

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The stillness presses on the eardrums. The garden's taking a beating — shade cloth anchors shredded, tomato stakes leaning. But there's nothing to do until the wind commits.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:49

way if the rain keeps this up. The garden is already a mess.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle shifts, and moves to the kitchen to check the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
"Same as always" doesn't keep the soil from washing away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:49

Tank's at three-eighty-eight. We've got margin.

pull the notebook from the shelf and flip to the garden page, pencil already in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side again. The poultice held yesterday but the swelling's back. She won't say it's worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:51

The soil on the ridge is already sliding. I need a stable patch.

Jenny runs a hand over the cold stone of the wall, feeling the vibration of the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Margin doesn't help if the ground turns to soup.

🔧 Kevin07:51

The volcanic outcrop above the spring. Three metres square. Ash soil, pH six-two, spring drainage, wind shadow. You found it.

tap the notebook page where the coordinates are written, then look up at her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
The north ridge. She's been mapping the slump for weeks. The intercept trench held last storm but the clay's saturated now — another heavy rain and the whole face could let go.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:53

It's the only place left that isn't salt-soaked yet.

Jenny looks at the sketch in her head, then back at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the spring doesn't hold, grandmother's seeds are just mulch.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:53

Then we plant it. Tomorrow if the wind drops.

tear a clean page from the notebook and start a fresh sketch — outcrop grid, bed lines, windbreak stakes

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's creeping up the slope. Another season and the whole ridge goes brackish. The outcrop's the last clean ground.
