The Morning Pantry Intrusion

Kevin and Jenny stand over the ruined flour sack, the smell of damp grain filling the small room. Outside, the sky thickens as the first heavy heavy rain drums against the tin roof.

Kevin burned the ruined sack of flour in the wood stove to prevent attracting more rats, while Jenny moved the damp seed trays from the windowsill to the shelf above to dry them out. The rain continues to hammer the roof as they work inside.

Flour's a write-off. We'll burn the sack in the stove — dry the chimney if nothing else.

pick up the chewed flour sack and carry it to the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's early. Barometer was steady at dawn. Means the front moved faster than the glass told us.

🌿 Jenny08:29

Make sure you get the whole thing. I don't want crumbs attracting more of them.

Walk to the windowsill and check the soil moisture in the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a lot of calories gone. We're okay for now, but the margin is getting thinner.

🔧 Kevin08:30

Got it. I'll scrape the floor and sweep the ashes out after.

tip the sack into the stove's firebox, then use the metal scoop to sweep every trace of flour from the stone floor into the flames

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. One grain left and we're feeding a nest behind the pantry.

🌿 Jenny08:30

Thank you.

Touch the surface of the heirloom tomato tray to check for damp-off.

💭 peek at the thought
Efficient. I appreciate that. Now, let's see if these seeds actually have the will to live in this humidity.

🔧 Kevin08:32

Trays still good?

close the stove door and latch it, watching the sack catch

💭 peek at the thought
Trays are holding. She knows what she's looking for — damp-off shows before you see it if you touch the soil first.

🌿 Jenny08:33

A bit too wet. I'm moving them to the stove shelf for a few hours to dry out.

Carefully lift the seed trays from the windowsill and place them on the shelf above the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Too damp. If I leave them here, the stems will just collapse into slime.

🔧 Kevin08:34

Leave the door cracked if the air gets too thick. They'll damp-off faster in stale heat than damp soil.

lean back against the counter, arms crossed, watching the rain hammer the porch roof through the window

💭 peek at the thought
Good call. The stove'll pull the moisture without cooking the seed. She's learning the cottage's rhythms faster than she lets on.
