Unloading the haul in the storm

Kevin and Jenny reach the cottage, drenched and shivering, with the heavy crate to be brought inside before the tide rises further.

Kevin hauls the waterlogged crate into the cottage to protect it from the coming rain. He uses the crowbar to pry the swollen lid open, but the rusted nails are stubborn and the wood groans under the pressure.

🌿 Jenny09:04

Get it by the door. I'll get the towels.

Lean against the whitewashed wall for a second to catch my breath, then move toward the linen cupboard.

💭 peek at the thought
My knees are screaming and I can barely think straight from the hunger. Just get it inside.

🔧 Kevin09:04

Towels by the stove. I’ll get the crate in.

lift the crate with both hands, using my legs and back, and carry it across the porch threshold into the kitchen, setting it down hard by the wood stove to keep it off the damp floor.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate’s soaked through — three times its dry weight, and the wood’s starting to split at the seams. If we don’t get it inside now, the tide’ll turn and we’ll be fighting suction and slick rocks. Jenny’s right — towels first, then we move it before dark.

🌿 Jenny09:06

Careful.

Grab two thick towels and toss one toward him, then walk over to the stove to check the remaining corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to break the floorboards if he's not careful. I need to eat something now or I'm going to faint.

🔧 Kevin09:06

Thanks.

catch the towel one-handed, wipe my face and neck quick, then hang it over the back of the kitchen chair to dry; turn back to the crate, crowbar already in reach, and wedge the flat end under the swollen lid where the rusted nails have give

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't say "you're cold" or "slow down" — just careful. Means she sees the strain. Good. The towel lands wet-heavy in my hands. Stove's still got heat. Corned beef fat'll help the limpets tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny09:08

Don't let the crowbar slip.

Lean against the counter, watching him with a hollow feeling in my stomach, clutching the edge of the towel.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of those nails popping is going to be deafening in here. I hope it's something we can actually eat.

🔧 Kevin09:08

Won't.

set the crowbar's fulcrum on a folded towel to protect the crate's rim, plant my boots shoulder-width on the stone floor, and lever slow — steady pressure, feeling for the first nail to scream free

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the crowbar. She's talking about the last time I slipped — Bay of Biscay, forty minutes in black water, the ship's lights shrinking. She knows. She's known for months. The hollow in her stomach matches the one in my chest every time the barometer drops.

🌿 Jenny09:10

Take it slow.

Watch the lid, my weight shifting onto my stiff knees, listening to the rain hammer the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If he rips the wood, we'll lose half of it. I'm so hungry my hands are shaking.

🔧 Kevin09:10

First one's moving.

hold the crowbar at the balance point, weight centered, and drive the second pry slow — letting the leverage do the work without jerking, feeling each fibre of the swollen timber complain before it yields

💭 peek at the thought
Three nails. Maybe four. The wood groans like a hull under strain. Salt-crusted iron doesn't want to let go. My knees lock — old injury, cold damp, doesn't matter. The lid shifts a hair. One more breath and the first nail head breaks surface.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:12

You've almost got it.

Move closer to the crate, peering over his shoulder to see the gap in the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost there. I can smell the wet wood and the salt. Please let there be something high-calorie in there.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:12

Nearly.

shift my weight to the balls of my feet, keep pressure on the crowbar, and work the third nail loose with a slow, rocking motion — feeling the wood fibers tear rather than snap, listening for the pitch change in the creak

💭 peek at the thought
Two nails up. The gap's widening — salt-sick wood splitting along the grain. Inside: metal glint. Tins. Rope coiled like a snake. Not flour. Not yet. But close. Her breath fogs the air behind me. She's close enough I could feel it if I wasn't so focused on not crushing my fingers when this lid finally lets go.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:14

There it goes.

Reach out to steady the lid so it doesn't flip back and hit him.

💭 peek at the thought
That sound is visceral. I can almost feel the wood splitting in my own teeth.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:15

Good catch.

set the crowbar down, peel the lid the rest of the way off with both hands, and reach in to lift the first tin — turning it slow in the lantern light to check the seal, thumb tracing the rim for pinholes or bloom

💭 peek at the thought
The lid gives all at once — a wet sigh of rotten wood and rust. She catches the edge before it slams back, fingers white-knuckled on the splintered rim. Inside: six tins corned beef, labels salt-blurred but seals intact. A glass jar of coffee, wax-sealed. And rope — new half-inch three-strand, dry and sound, coiled neat as a bosun's work. Not the brittle salt-crusted stuff from the dock. This was packed to last.
