the keeper's cottage · day 770 · evening

The storm front approaches

The temperature drops slightly as the first gust of wind picks up from the east, rattling the newly secured shutters on the cottage shutters.

The heavy, humid air finally breaks as a stiff wind picks up from the northwest, carrying the sharp scent of salt. The barometric pressure continues to drop, signaling the storm front is moving faster than the morning reading suggested.

Kevin, check the latch on the kitchen window. It's rattling.

stand up slowly and walk to the edge of the porch to watch the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. If the pressure holds, the garden won't be washed away to mud.

🔧 Kevin10:20

On it.

walk to the kitchen window, inspect the latch, tighten or shim it as needed

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting east. Shutters I battened yesterday holding, but the kitchen window latch was loose last week. She hears it before I do — always does.

🌿 Jenny10:21

Jenny — reach into my pocket and touch the cold metal of the grandmother's seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware, but the soil is what's actually sliding.

🔧 Kevin10:22

Kevin — finish securing the window latch, then step onto the porch to see what she's doing

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the shrine again. Or the porch edge. The tin's in my pack by the door — she must've taken it while I was at the dock. Testing the seal. Or just holding it.

🌿 Jenny10:23

The way is dropping too fast. We need to make sure the shade cloth is weighted down for good.

lean against the railing, watching the grey water break over the rocks below.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning. If the tide comes in any faster, the salt spray will ruin the new seedlings.

🔧 Kevin10:24

Center lines need weight. Cribbing stones from the garden wall.

grab the wheelbarrow, head to the garden to collect cribbing stones for the shade cloth anchors

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 986 and rising an hour ago. If it's dropping now, it's dropping fast. Shade cloth anchors shredded by the crab last week — I re-staked corners but the center lines are just timber battens. Won't hold if the wind funnels up the ridge.

🌿 Jenny10:27

(voice quiet) Hand me the tarp. I'll check the corners. (sharp) Center lines need weight. Cribbing stones from the garden wall.

walk to the garden wall and grab the cedar stakes, feeling their smooth ends where I'd carved my initials into them years ago. </think> grab the spare roll of shade cloth from the shed and check for tears along the hem.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones are for the cloth, but the soil is for the seeds. Why do I always fix everything except what matters? The wind carries salt now. If it reaches the heirloom beds, everything I've saved through the winter will die.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Shed's unlocked. Spare roll on the left shelf.

load cribbing stones into the wheelbarrow at the garden wall, then push it up toward the north ridge beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Good. Cedar stakes I carved initials into — she noticed. Or she's using what's there. Spare shade cloth roll in the shed, heavy canvas. Need to check the hem for tears before we deploy.

🌿 Jenny10:29

(quietly, almost to myself) The wind's turning salt already.

pull the corner of the tarp at the east end where the rivulets are already finding gaps.

💭 peek at the thought

🔧 Kevin10:30

Roof tarp or garden beds?

push the wheelbarrow up the slope toward the north ridge, scanning the cottage roof tarp for loose battens as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the wind means it's off the open water, not just the ridge. East end of the tarp — that's the garden beds, not the shade cloth. She's checking the cottage roof tarp I battened. Rivulets finding gaps means the batten strips have worked loose or the timber's shifting in the clay.
