A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin12:46

Water's boiling if you want another mug.

Set the kettle back on the stove and pull out the tin of corned beef. Slice what's left cold onto two chipped plates.

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller after the north ridge. Rain hammers the tin roof — steady, not violent. The barometer's rising. Storm's passing. We're still here.

🌿 Jenny12:47

Thanks.

sit at the small kitchen table, staring at the plate of beef while listening to the rain on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but the rain won't stop lashing.

🔧 Kevin12:48

Eat it cold or I'll warm the skillet. Your call.

Pull out the chair opposite her and sit. Pick up my fork but don't start. Watch her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not eating. Just sitting with it. The rain's loud enough to cover whatever I don't say.

🌿 Jenny12:49

Cold is fine.

take a small bite of the beef, chewing slowly while watching the rain sheets against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
I don't have the energy to watch a skillet, I just need to eat.

🔧 Kevin12:50

Kevin — eat my own portion. Clean the plate. Pour the last of the coffee from the pot into both mugs without asking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's still here. Still breathing. The ankle's healing. The barometer's rising. That's the whole list.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:51

Jenny — take a sip of the coffee, the ceramic mug warming my cold hands, and look at the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quiet when the wind is up. It makes it heavy.

🔧 Kevin12:52

Tin's not going anywhere.

Rinse my mug in the basin. Dry my hands on the towel. Walk to the shelf and take the tin down. Set it on the table between us. Pry the lid with the church key blade.

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the E tin. Again. Hasn't stopped since we hauled it up from the crate. I should open it. Should've opened it weeks ago. The rust eats everything given time.

🌿 Jenny12:53

Is it dry inside?

lean forward, watching his hands as the metal resists, waiting for the scent of damp earth or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's mold in there, I might lose everything. I can't lose her seeds.

🔧 Kevin12:54

We'll see.

The lid gives with a wet suck of air. Tip the tin toward the light. Dump the contents onto the scrubbed tabletop.

💭 peek at the thought
The seal holds or it doesn't. My hands know before my eyes do.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:03

(held breath)

reach out, my fingers hovering just over the pile of seeds, checking for any clumping or white fuzz of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
God, they look so small. Please let the humidity not have gotten to them.

🔧 Kevin13:03

Clean. Every packet.

Pick up the first packet. Read the label. Set it down. Pick up the next. Tomato. Pepper. Sea beet. Basil. Lettuce. Something in Cyrillic. Something with no label at all. Count them into two piles — labeled and mystery.

💭 peek at the thought
Paper packets. More than I expected. Ink faded but legible on most. No clumps. No fuzz. The desiccant packets did their work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:07

What's in the plain one?

pick up the unlabelled packet, feeling the dry paper between my thumbs, looking for any faint pencil markings on the back.

💭 peek at the thought
The mystery ones are always the ones she kept the longest. I need to sketch them before I forget.
