Preparing the meal

The smell of woodsmoke fills the small space as the tide continues to fall outside.

Kevin installed the irrigation line behind the garden wall using the copper pipe and bamboo stakes. Jenny worked on soil amendment in the microsite to prepare it for the heirloom seeds while the sky grew darker.

🌿 Jenny14:05

The pressure is dropping again. We need to secure the tarp before the rain hits.

Chop the potatoes into small cubes, my hands shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can barely think, and if that boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to start eating the sketches.

🔧 Kevin14:06

Tarp's battened. West ridge and chimney flashing held last blow. Garden beds got the spare canvas. What's left exposed?

Wipe the Yanmar filter housing bowl clean with a rag, set it aside, and walk to the porch door to check the sky westward.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Barometer was 978 and rising an hour ago — if it's turning back down this fast, the front's doubling back on us. My hands are steady on the filter housing but hers are shaking on the knife. Ankle's bothering her more than she'll say.

🌿 Jenny14:07

The area behind the garden wall. I need to get the irrigation line up there or the seedlings will wilt by morning.

Point to the half-weedy patch near the stone wall, tracing the edge of the soil with my knife.

💭 peek at the thought
The microsite on the lee side is the only risk; if the salt spray gets over that, grandmother's seeds are gone.

🔧 Kevin14:08

Copper pipe's on the porch. Two-meter hose extension coiled beside it. Bamboo stakes in the shed. I'll run the line. You stay off the slope.

Pick up the copper spillway pipe and hose from the porch, grab the bamboo stakes from the shed, and walk up the garden path toward the north ridge beds.

💭 peek at the thought
The north ridge beds. She means the expansion. Trench held the last surge but the clay weep at the northeast corner's still active. If she's running irrigation up there she'll need the copper spillway extended past the new beds — and the ankle won't take the grade.

🌿 Jenny14:09

I'll start the soil amendment while you're up there. The pH is too acidic for them otherwise.

Grab the tin of seeds from the counter, feeling the weight of them in my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping so hard I can't focus on the pH levels, but the soil needs lime now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:10

Lime's in the shed on the pallet. Crushed sack by the door. Don't carry the whole bag — scoop what you need in the tin. I'll have the water running by the time you're up.

Climb the path to the north ridge beds, uncoil the copper pipe from the existing spillway end, and start staking the hose extension along the new drainage bed toward the expansion zone.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on it anyway. Stubborn as the engine bolts. The lime's in the shed — two burlap sacks, half-damp but usable. She knows the pH map cold: untreated beds 5.5 to 5.8, limed strips 6.8 to 7.0. Seed tin in her hand means she's planting something. Sea beet or the heirloom tomatoes. Either way the soil needs the amendment before the rain hits or it'll wash clean through.

🌿 Jenny14:11

I'm heading to the shed now. The sky is turning too dark fast.

Walk toward the shed, clutching my stomach as every step hurts.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get this pH right, the seeds will just rot in the dirt. I'm too weak to even lift the shovel.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:12

Take the canteen on the porch rail. Drink something before the lime dust hits your throat. I'll meet you at the beds with water running.

Drive the next bamboo stake into the clay, feed the hose through the notch, and glance back toward the shed to watch her progress.

💭 peek at the thought
She's white-knuckling it. Every step jars the ankle and she's clutching her gut like the antibiotics are turning on her. Metronidazole does that on an empty stomach — or if the infection's deeper than the wound. She won't stop. Won't say it hurts. Just keeps moving.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:15

I'll be right behind you. way give me the water first.

Reach for the canteen, my fingers trembling as I take a long, desperate swallow of water.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is a knot of acid, but I have to get that lime down before the rain washes the soil right away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:15

Sit. Breathe. I'll bring the lime up in the tin. You direct me where to spread it.

Unsling the canteen from my own belt, walk back down the path toward her, and hold it out steady.

💭 peek at the thought
Desperate swallow. Throat working hard. She's dehydrated on top of everything — fever, antibiotics, not eating enough. The canteen was half-full. She took more than half. Hands shaking bad now, not just the ankle. She shouldn't be hauling lime up a clay slope in this light.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:21

Okay. Just... just help me with the lee side once the water is set.

Take the canteen, drink again, and look at the microsite where the garden wall meets the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, I can't see straight if I don't eat. I need to stay focused on the pH.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:21

Done. Water first. Then you point, I spread.

Turn back up the path, finish staking the last length of hose to the expansion beds, and connect it to the copper spillway with a twist of wire from my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
She's negotiating. Trading the heavy work for the light work. The lee side of the wall — that's the sheltered patch we tested at pH 6.2. Only needs a light dusting. She knows I'll say yes because it gets her off the slope. Smart. Stubborn. Alive.
