Night watch and radio

Rain hammers the roof. The generator runs. Kevin sits at the table with the shortwave, headphones on, calling Tom on 2182. Jenny lies on the bunk, ankle elevated, listening to the static. The barometer reads 979 and rising. The supply boat is due tomorrow.

Kevin's radio call to Tom on 2182 kHz was swallowed by static with no reply. He inspected the garden wall's north end and found the intercept trench clear but the clay saturated, needing dry weather. Jenny applied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice to her ankle and wrapped it in clean gauze.

Kevin, tell him to check the tide- charts again.

Pick up the notebook and sketch the way the water is pooling against the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, those seeds will rot in the mud before they even sprout.

Tide charts are in the nav bag. I'll call him again.

key the mic and speak into the shortwave: "Tom, this is Kevin on Sorrel Island, 2182 kHz. Supply boat due tomorrow. Confirm you received the trust letter. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
The radio's been quiet for hours. Tom won't answer — he hasn't in months. But Jenny asked, so I'll call once more. The barometer's rising. Storm's breaking. Supply boat tomorrow if the sea allows.

Kevin... did you hear that crack?

Check the tide pools for displaced limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The static swallowed his words again. Of course it did.

Heard it. Stay off the ankle. I'll check.

set the headphones down, grab the LED headlamp, and step out onto the porch to listen and scan the roofline, the garden wall, and the dock lines

💭 peek at the thought
Crack could be the cottage shifting, the dock taking a hit, or just the generator shed settling. Need to check. Jenny's ankle's bad — she shouldn't be moving around tide pools in this rain.

Every sound out here is a warning I can't read.

Wall's weeping at the north end. Trench is clear but the clay's saturated. Give it a day of dry weather. Your ankle?

walk back inside, set the headlamp on the table, and check the antibiotic blister pack — count remaining doses

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wall. The clay behind it's saturated — water's weeping through the joints. The intercept trench took the surface flow, but the subsoil's holding. If the barometer keeps rising, we've got a day before it destabilizes. Her ankle's swollen hot. Poultice won't hurt, but the antibiotics are what's working.

I'll watch the trench.

You stay here. I'll watch the trench at first light.

sit on the edge of the bunk, lift her ankle gently, and spread the sea beet-mint poultice over the swollen joint, then wrap it clean with gauze

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. The trench is my job — I built it, I monitor it. But she'll do what she wants. Her ankle's hot to the touch, skin stretched shiny over the swelling. The antibiotics started yesterday. Poultice might draw some heat. She needs to stay off it.
