A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heavy, humid air hangs motionless over the cottage, thick with the scent of the coming rain. The barometer continues its slow decline to 980 hPa, while the tide retreats, exposing slick rocks and drying pools.

🔧 Kevin15:28

Kevin — walk to the rain tank and check the sight gauge, then check the generator fuel level

💭 peek at the thought
Back in the dry. The stove's putting out heat. Radio's humming on the shelf. Need to check the water tank level and see if the generator needs a top-off before dark. Letter to Tom's still in the dry bag by the loft ladder — should seal it proper and log the coordinates for the supply boat pickup.

🌿 Jenny15:29

Water's holding up for now, I think.

Sit on the way step, opening my notebook, and sketch the way the water is pooling near the ridge line.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is nearly full, but if this rain holds, the lee slope will be underwater before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin15:31

Tank's at three-ninety-seven. Generator's half. You want the last strip from the test kit for the pooled water up there?

pull a tin mug from the shelf and set water to heat on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the saturation line. Smart. The ridge clay doesn't shed water — it holds it till the whole slope lets go. Her sketches will show the progression better than my memory.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:32

yeah, I need to know if it's turning acidic yet.

Reach into the test kit on the table and pull out the final pH strip.

💭 peek at the thought
If I use the last strip, I can't test the soil on the ridge later, but that runoff looks like toxic soup.

🔧 Kevin15:33

Hold on, let’s run the strip. If it’s got that green‑red mix, we’ll have to dig a new drainage line, or at least lay a strip of bitumen to keep the clay from leaching.

apply the pH strip to the pooled water near the ridge line and read the colour, then log the result in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Acid creeping in quicker than I thought. If the pH drops below 5.5, the plants will die. Need to act before the next storm.

🌿 Jenny15:34

If it's bad, we have to find another spot on the lee slope.

Lean over to watch the strip change color, holding my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's acidic, grandmother's seeds won't stand a chance in that patch of soil at all.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:34

It's pink. Four point something. Lee slope it is.

write "pH 4.8 — ridge pool, 14:30" in the notebook and set the used strip aside

💭 peek at the thought
Strip's going pink at the edge. That's bad. Below 5.5. The lee slope's the only ground left that drains, but it's steep and the soil's thin. We'd be building beds on rock.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:35

Right. We'll check the stability further up the ridge then.

Take the tin of seeds from my pocket and traces the edge with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Four point eight? That's too low for the *Cananga*. The island is leaching the life out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:36

Bring the auger. We'll test bite at the ten, twenty, thirty metre marks. See if the clay holds or if we're building on soup.

pick up the soil auger from against the garden wall and head for the north ridge

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — seed stock first, ground second. The tin's got the heirloom tomato, pepper, and the sea beet we cleaned. If the ridge goes, we lose the lot. Lee slope's got maybe three metres of workable soil before it hits shale. We'll need to terrace.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:39

I'm coming. I need the notebook to map the layers.

Grab the notebook and the seed tin, then follow him toward the slope.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil is too unstable, I'm not wasting grandmother's seeds on a landslide waiting.
