The Rising Downpour

Rain lashes against the roof from the west, turning the garden path into a slurry. Kevin and Jenny stand under the eaves, watching the water channel off the gutters toward the saturated garden.

Kevin attempted to shore the west garden wall corner with greenheart sister plates but the saturated clay caused bolts to pull through. Jenny checked the water tank and confirmed it was full at 400 litres, then began examining the grandmother's seed tin for mold.

Trench held overnight. But the clay's not draining. Another day like this and we're digging the secondary spillway at the west corner.

walk to the north garden wall with the spade, check the intercept trench flow and the weep points marked with chalk

💭 peek at the thought
The gutters are running clean — no overflow at the corners. That flashing held. But the ground's taking it slower than yesterday. Clay's at saturation. If the trench silts another tide cycle, we lose the north wall footing.

The west corner is too heavy, Kevin. If you cut into it now, the whole slope will slide into the dock.

If he digs there, he'll artwork the foundation of the north wall. The pressure is already at its breaking point.

Then we shore it first. Greenheart plates are staged under the eaves. Drive stakes, bolt the sister plates, then cut the spillway. Two tides of work if the rain holds.

walk back to the cottage, retrieve the two greenheart sister plates and the 150mm stainless through-bolts from under the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The west corner sits on that blue clay lens — I saw it in the test pits. Cutting a spillway there without shoring first would undercut the whole slope. The dock pilings would follow.

🌿 Jenny16:09

Get the hammer ready. I'll check the water tank level while you prep the plates.

stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle shifts, and walk toward the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the plates, but he's too optimistic about the soil holding the weight. It's like soup.

🔧 Kevin16:10

Hammer's on the bench. Tank was full at dawn — 400 litres. If the gutters hold, we're fine.

pick up the heavy claw hammer from the workshop bench, then carry the greenheart plates and bolts to the west corner of the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side still. The antibiotics are working — no heat in the joint this morning — but the tendon's stiff. She shouldn't be carrying water buckets up from the spring. I'll do it after the shoring's in.

🌿 Jenny16:11

Don't force the bolts. If the clay is too soft, they'll just pull through.

run a hand over the cold metal of the rain tank, feeling the vibration of the water drumming inside.

💭 peek at the thought
400 litres is a lot of weight for a slope that saturated. I hope the gutters don't give out.
