NIGHT

The air remains still as the barometer continues to rise. They wait for the morning's radio signal.

The heavy air sits still over the cottage as the tide rises against the dock. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening indoors, the humidity of the wet season making any physical labor on the garden wall impossible.

🔧 Kevin17:08

Kevin — walk to the workshop shed, pull the Yanmar fuel filter housing, inspect the bowl for silt

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's up to 984. Air's still heavy but the trend's right. If it holds through morning we might actually get the boat on schedule. Need to check the Yanmar filter before first light — silt's been building since the last rain.

🌿 Jenny17:09

The clay is too heavy for the wall, Kevin.

Sit on the porch steps, pull out the notebook, and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found near the tide pools.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come in nine days, I'm going to start eating the seeds just to feel something.

🔧 Kevin17:11

Auger bit seized on a root at depth. Clay's saturated past thirty centimetres. Plates pulled through because there's no purchase. We'll need deadmen upslope or a deeper trench to firm ground.

set the filter housing on the workbench, crack the drain bolt, let the bowl empty into a jar to check the silt load

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The clay at the west corner goes down past where the auger bit seized — thirty centimetres at least before you hit anything that'll hold. Greenheart plates pulled through because there's no bite. Need a deadman anchor upslope, or drive the trench deeper to where the substrate firms up. Neither's a morning job.

🌿 Jenny17:13

I'll check the lee slope tomorrow if my ankle stops screaming.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts, and walk toward the kitchen to de-mold the grandmother's seed tin to see if the damp has finally won.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always talking about the structural integrity of things while the world is just turning to mush.

🔧 Kevin17:13

Don't. Ankle's not ready for that slope. I'll run the transect myself at first light — same elevations, same markers.

watch the silt settle in the jar, holding it to the lantern light to gauge the layer thickness

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's not right. The swelling went down with the antibiotics but the heat's still there under the skin. She'll walk it anyway — she always does. The lee slope's the least of it; if the north wall goes, the garden goes with it.

way don't lose the markers in the mud like last time.

Sit at the kitchen table, pick up the tin, and begin carefully scraping the white mold from the lid with a dry brush.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can do it better, but I'm the one who will Notice where the soil actually holds.

🔧 Kevin17:15

Cairns are solid. Three on the approach ridge — you placed the middle one. They'll hold.

pour off the clean diesel from the jar top, tip the silt onto a rag to measure the depth with a rule

💭 peek at the thought
Cairns held last storm. Three stone piles on the north ridge approach — she helped me place them. They're not going anywhere unless the whole slope cuts loose. Tin's got the heirloom tomato and pepper lines. If mold's only on the lid, the seeds inside are probably still viable. She knows that. She's methodical about it because she has to be.

🌿 Jenny17:17

just make sure they don't wash away when the tide turns.

pry the tin open, inhaling the scent of old earth and rot, and check the grandmother's seeds for any sign of life.

💭 peek at the thought
he's so confident in those rocks while the island is literally melting under our feet.
