The Storm Breaches

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind picks up from the north.

The humidity is heavy, pressing against the cottage as the flat sky darkens with the promise of evening rain. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the muddy flats beyond. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of drying sea beet and medicinal poultice, while Kevin and Jenny manage the physical toll of the day's work.

🔧 Kevin17:47

Shutters. Generator shed. Now.

grab the heavy wrench and head for the east shutter first, dogging the bolts into the greenheart sister plates

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here early. Barometer was 980 steady an hour ago — now it's moving. Need the shutters dogged and the generator shed battened before the wind backs west.

🌿 Jenny17:47

I'm coming. Just watch the south latch.

Grab the grandmother's seed tin from the table and move to the porch to secure the south shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is going to slide before I even get the auger out. If the seeds flood, they rot.

🔧 Kevin17:48

Kevin — throw the 19mm wrench onto the porch planks for her, then spin the east shutter bolts home — bottom first, then top, checking the greenheart plates don't shift

💭 peek at the thought
South latch sticks in the salt. She knows it. Good she's on it.

🌿 Jenny17:49

I got it.

Tuck the seed tin under one arm and pull the south shutter down, locking the bolts into place.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. The wind is going to catch the edge if they aren't seated.

🔧 Kevin17:50

Generator shed. Meet you there.

jog down the path to the shed, grab the ratchet straps coiled on the door frame, and start throwing the heavy canvas over the fuel drum stack

💭 peek at the thought
East shutter's holding. South's done. Generator shed next — roof tarps over the fuel drums, ratchet straps on the corners. Rain's coming sideways already.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:51

I'm right behind you.

Bolt the south shutter, grab the seed tin, and head for the shed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails in this storm, we're in the dark for days.

🔧 Kevin17:52

Kevin — haul the canvas over the drum stack, thread the ratchet straps through the shed's corner eyes, and crank them down hard — one, two, three, four — checking each bite

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing northwest. Harder gusts hitting the shed broadside. Get the tarp down tight, straps cinched before the rain loads it.

🌿 Jenny17:53

Tighten the windward side.

Step into the shed, set the seed tin on the workbench, and help him secure the straps.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If that canvas flaps, it'll tear like paper.

🔧 Kevin17:54

East corner last. Hardest.

crank the east ratchet until the canvas screams, lock the handle, then check the other three for slack

💭 peek at the thought
Windward side's the east corner — takes the fetch off the bay. She's right. Cinch that one last, hardest.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:55

Looks tight.

Press my hand against the canvas to Ensure it won't budge, checking the generator for any leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but that sky is turning a nasty shade of green.
